Personally, I've never understood why one end would go in before the other...I think the rule of thumb is to have the tighter-wound coils down, but I don't know why....(and I may be wrong on that)

From Progressive Suspensions installation instruction sheet:

"Mechanically, it makes no difference which way the springs are installed. Some manuals will state: install the spring with the close wound towards the bottom. This is done because sometimes there will be less spring noise. The springs will perform exactly the same regardless of which direction they are placed"

One thing to consider is that REGARDLESS of which way the springs are installed, the DEPTH of fork oil is a big factor on how the forks respond. That amount of air contributes its own "springiness" (lacking a better word)

You really need to measure the level of oil and not use a volume measurement (pour in just so many cc's) - that way you don't have to worry about which end of the spring goes down or up (progressive spring)

Just get the tools from Al @ American Sport Bike and do the service yourself.
It is not hard at all.
The Buell is a very enjoyable bike to service and putter around on in the garage.

After I got mine all put back together now, there is a slight tick noise on compression and another on rebound on my right side fork about 4 inches down from the top cap. Do you think I may need to disassemble to find it. It's not a loud thunk. Almost like dropping a paperclip on a desk very gently but only with one distinct click each way. Could the damper rod retaining nut be loose? I'm a little concerned but really would like some opinions.

I haven't taken it out for a test ride yet but the garage 'feel' is much better with less stiction.

This thread got me motivated.
I just got done changing the oil in my 12Scg shocks. Just oil, no bushings or seals.

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Had I known, I wouldn't have procrastinated as long as i have.

I made damn sure to pay attention to which end of the spring was up since the cg has progressive springs.
The lighter end down, tighter, stiffer end up.

I need to invest in the HD fork holder.
I took a 2x6 and drilled a 2" hole in it then cut it down the middle and shaved it a little bit. It's clamped using a Craftsman work table (the clamping kind).

It worked good enough but it was a wee bit of a pain in the arse.
I missed the first half of the Super Bowl as a result.

Tom, you didn't miss much in the first half. Really if you caught the first 5 mins and the last 5 mins the rest was pretty boring unless you love defense.
