Thanks for the reference KC10_fe. That is the same stuff I briefed at Aviano's preseason rodeo. No day-glo stuff. Something as simple as red leather works during the day. And if it has reflective pin stripping it will work at night too.

Hated reading that, but I think it's cool you posted it as a reminder. I'm a 10-year USAF veteran myself, and it's because of that (1986-1996) that I ever started doing basic things like wearing a seatbelt. The laws were always stricter on base than off base. I do wish your buddy the best, although it doesn't sound good. Lastly, thanks for your service!!

My dad rides a Harley (I know) without a helmet. He got real lucky about 20 years ago when a car pulled out in front of him. The only thing that saved him was his leg catching on his ape hangers. It gave his body just enough rotation to come down on his ass as opposed to his head. He did have one small scrape by his widows peak where his head did touch for a split second. To this day he still rides without a helmet, and he gives me no end of grief about wearing one. I'll never ride without. I started with some garbage can I bought at a dealership, but recently upgraded to the icon domain 2. I can highly recommend. My heart goes out to you and the family of your friend. I think surviving in a waking coma would almost be worse than death in this case. It kills me that hindsight is crystal clear. |

condolences that is horrible to hear. im not mil but did work in iraw for a bit and the advice abouve about going slow is very very good. i came home after several months of not riding and bought my 1125R so re-entry riding and a new bike and new style to boot it was some very slow riding for me and still is to be honest |

Last night, on my way home driving my truck, had a motorcycle fatality right behind me.The car saw my big truck but didn't see the bike behind me. Guy on the bike wasn't wearing a helmet. The face plant on the pavement didn't kill him immediately, me and the bystanders had to watch him moan for a few minutes till he expired.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he would have survived had he been wearing a full face helmet. We were only going 25 mph. sat there two hours in order to give my statement to two motorcycle officers. Plenty of time to listen to the guys wife and mother howling and asking how this could have happened.
Not riding the bike today, but I'm stopping in at the motorgear shop to look at new gear. |

Wow, that's rough. Best of luck dealing with the issues from seeing that. Good reminder of just how squishy humans are, though. We don't have terribly hard shells by default.
And unless it was very much an edge case, I'd agree that pretty much anything at 25mph, with a helmet, should be survivable, and with full gear, you stand a very good chance of walking away from it (quite possibly in pain, but still in one piece and living).
I'm very much aware, every time I ride, that it's a dangerous way of getting from point A to point B, but I enjoy it so much that I'm willing to take the risks. However, I do what I can to keep the risks as low as possible (99% ATGATT, occasionally will ride in jeans without riding overpants, always helmet/jacket/gloves). |
