Local dealer already sold their first alotment of 1125r's. Hrumphhh... hope they put it on the floor before delivering so we can get a look see.

It may be important to consider the engine speeds at which the various alternator ratings may apply. Regardless, it will be interesting to learn the rationale behind the various changes. Will see if we can get an explanation. : )

I don't think that the air cooled Buells will go away entirely, I just think that the firebolt will end up losing too many sales to the 1125r.

It does not make any sense for a business to foster competition between two of it's own models. On will always wilt on the vine.

I expect the lightning and Uly models to continue on air cooled for a while longer.

The 12R may last for some time yet. Remember it is supposed to be compared to the 600 class rice burners and not liter bikes like the 1125R. Dropping it actually puts a hole in their line up. It's tooling has been paid for and most of it's parts are common to the rest of Buell's line up. Unless sales of the 12R totally tank it should be around awhile. I'd hate to see it go and think it has a place.
IMHO the new motor wouldn't be good for the Uly but would be great for a sport tourer.

There are Monster Air cooled models and an S4 Monster water cooled that has the 999 engine (1098 now). Both sell well, I wouldn't be surprised if the Air cooled monster sells better.

But I see your point. And upright seater might bias towards air, and a racer style bike likely biases towards water. But I still think there is room in the lineup for both.

BTW, the new alternator is 32A, not 30A. Down from 38A.

The 12r actually falls in the lightweight class for CCS.

I waited till now to order my new Buell. My 1125R. will be the first one in Atlanta. Seems the difference in this bike and my 73 Norton are so great you can only see the one main similarity, being that they both have two wheels. But at least the winters are warmer here. I'm excited... Hurry January!

Where'd you see the 32 amp rating? Here's what I found at buell.com:

07 alternator spec: 494W peak, 38-amp, permanent magnet, 3-phase alternator with solid-state regulator

08 alternator spec: 30-amp, permanent magnet, single-phase alternator with solid-state regulator (405W @3000 rpm, 405W peak)

I'm well aware of what racing class the 12r falls into, being part of the Mid-America H-D/Buell team in ASRA CCS
Diablomichael is the pilot, #56.

That isn't enough of an incentive for Buell to keep the model in the lineup since they are in the business of
building street bikes. The profit margin has to be there to perpetuate the model.

FWIW the bikes last basically forever as racers. The chassis just doesn't break even in the worst of high-sides.
I think I've seen one Buell that had the head tube broken off (design feature) that had to be retired, and the
motors are almost infinitely re-buildable, as long as you don't put a rod through the case.

That means there are plenty of XB chassis and motors out there to keep the racers in bikes for a LONG time.

I love my firebolt, and I also would hate to see the model go the way of the dodo. I'm just looking at things from
the perspective of what is the best move for Buell, and I see the firebolt going away in the next couple of years
leaving the lightning series and Uly to carry the air cooled flag.

I know that this point of view will not be popular, I'm just calling it like I see it.

you're right Brian , for me its a shame.
the fortune of Buell was / is a sport frame like the xb is with that particular unique engine like the v-twin is. the top sport model of the company must represent this equation.i will not follow them because of a belt or a particular brakes system ( that does'nt work is my personal idea).

Brian, I was not saying that Buell will keep the XBs for the lightweight lineup. I was saying that more beginner racers will be drawn to the lightweight class than to the heavyweight class. Also Buell is part of HD therefore keeping an air cooled race bike is probably top priority to HD. Yet I do think Buell needs to lower the price of the XB so that it is more appealing to people getting into racing or whatever.

12R has no plans to be retired. Very different bike than 1125, and we expect quite a few customers will still want these.

It appears to me that the 1125R is pure business, whereas the 12R is a recreational bike. Some who may want the 12R will be swayed to the 1125R, but the 1125R will draw the riders who were never interested in air-cooled-two-valvers. It's like comparing the Avalanche to the Ridgeline, similar in idea but completely different vehicles ...and completely different markets.

I agree the two bikes will draw different riders. I race an xb12r and a zx636. I have no intention to move up to the heavyweight class.

The crowd that will be drawn to the 1125r is the folks that are afraid of or not willing to adjust primaries, change oil, and wear Harley gear. These riders read road tests, track tests, and want the one that is quick, fast, collectible, and sexy. I got my Buell to do long trips. What other manufacturer has a dealership in almost every major city? Yeah, have your Aprillia or KTM break down 1000 miles from home. The XB's will all sell (word is getting out, the reliability issues of the tubers is almost non-existent), and the 1125r's will all sell (new bling new exclusive club). As for the engine being made by Rotax, did you know that the Aluminum Corvette engines were originally made by Mercruiser? (GM didn't have the technology or facilities to make all AL blocks in those days)

I for one would love one (or two) of each.. a different bike to do the different jobs..

I'm hoping to keep my '03 9R (the original XB - thank you very much) and get an 1125.. I'd also love to have a 12Ss or Uly.. and one of the new 12R's.. and .. and.. damn.. If I had the money.. I'd probably be getting divorced when the wife sees all the bike invading the garage.. hehehehehe..

I love my '03 XB9R (put deposit on new '02 in Oct of '01, and took delivery in Apr of '02 however Buell decided to classify these first releases as 03's so I actually got to ride a "new year" model for 2 seasons. Then the 04's came out and Buell dropped the price. Anyway, the bike is a riot and the Firebolt design is timeless in my opinion. To this day almost 5.5 years after owning I still have curious people surround the bike where ever I go asking all kinds of questions. The novelty of being "new" has not wore off. I am really intrigued by the new 1125. Buell has hit another home run. This new 1125 will continue in the Buell tradition of mystifying onlookers and owners alike. Way to go Erik! Thanks for another winner!!
