The colored fonts, particularly yellow, are nearly
impossible to read though they are pretty. If you ever
have the time (I know you're laughing) check out the
Miata owners website at http://miata.net/. This is very
impressive site with an amazing amount of resources for
the Miata owner. The great thing about BWB is the folks
the frequent this place. Gotta love 'em.

Ed.: We agree, colors are gone (for the most part anyway).

Seperate the "conversation" into 1)appropiate technical and advisory with directly Buell, non-personal, related remarks and 2) meaningless, rambling, "too-cool dude", lets go meet at the such and such and have everyone admire our cool bikes, blabber (and I can expect a few 'healthy' suggestions over this one!).

Ed.: We've tried this in even more extensive fashion than you suggested. Unfortunately it's up to the user to find and hit the "Create New Conversation" button on the General Discussion Board. If the current approach fails we may implement separate tech and conversation pages.

I think you are doing a great job and providing a needed service.

I would agree with Lapsley. Two pages, one for "meaningless rambling", and another for "technical" information.

There are too many possible conversation locations right now. The two I suggested above, a picture page, and maybe one more for good measure. But, nine is 5-6 too many.

Ricardo

Ed.: We like the pages we have in place now, except we will integrate the "Quick Fixes" page into the appropriate FAQ page. Try using the "New Messages" utility to facilitate your BADWEB browsing.

Those of us on web tv cannot access all of the GDB and the Cool Pics sections because the pages are too long. I have no idea if this is something that can be fixed with the present format. With the other site (ATC) we do not have this problem since the format is completly different. I can access only until about the middle of the month until the page is too big on this site.

Ed.: We'll try to keep the GDB and other pages down to size for you. However, our recommendation would be to get a PC and a real internet browser so that you can enjoy BADWEB even when the pages get lengthy. Keep in mind that BADWEB receives significantly more posts than the ATC site. As an example yesterday's tallies were... BADWEB 93 posts excluding password requests - ATC 16 posts. The reason? BADWEB, especially with the "New Messages" utility, is preferred due to better user friendly format and readability, not to mention all the cool formatting tools at your disposal.

Blake,

The way things are starting to get grouped is great. It narrows the scope when trying to catch-up.

The only other suggestions I would have follow:
* Ask the So Cal guys to brag about their great weather and rides in an appropriate Regional Storm Fronts section
* Stop time so I can catch-up. Don't these people eat, sleep, and have jobs.

Keep up the great work!

DJ

Ed.: Please feel free to flame the So Cal group in order to get them to post local blathering on the appropriate regional page. Try the New Messages utility to help facilitate BADWEB browsing. Thanks, it is definitely work lately, but we want to continually improve BADWEB, so that is to be expected.

I've only been reading since about December so I'm a "newbie". I've looked everywhere, but can't find Court's "story" and how he became so close to "Buell". (Ferris & Fearless, all the "infamous old-timers" as well. ;-) Inquiring minds want to know who these people are behind the scenes. (Like the great Oz? ;-) Perhaps something on personal profiles?

My humble suggestion would be to have only one link color. The current multi-color jumble makes it hard to quickly grasp the format and heirarchy of the site. Plus you loose the common feature of visited links being a different color than unvisited links.

Another longer term suggestion would be a user database. So those of us that log in can register what kind of bikes they have, where they live, etc... This information would be linked to whenever we post, so readers can get some context.

Ed.: Agreed on the colors thing. Concerninng the user database, that's a great idea, and I'll work on implementing it. The BBS software isn't super flexible for me, but if we could get everyone to get and use their username/pw, we could then each edit our own profile and add the pertinent info to our "Full Name" and "Email Address" so that our name, bike model, and local would get reported at the top of each post. This requires that the poster fill in the correct username and password rather than a miscellaneous username and email address, as is currently the practice. Wanna help me push that?

It occurs to me that it would save time and be infinitely more efficient if I would just tell some of the stories of my 1983 XR-1000 with my shirt off . . . . naaaaaah, we're not that efficient !

Ed.: Concerning the no shirt part... we're not quite that desperate... well, I'm not sure I speak for Ralph.

My "Buell Story" is pretty much unbeleivable and I'll leave it to the GREAT folks who have joined in along the way like KING FERRIS ! Perhaps he'd waive my blackmail payment for withholding the now incriminating "shirt" picture.

Ed.: Ferris!! You hear that. Start tellin' ole buddy!

What all with the specific conversations going on the main page the FAQ's seem to be superflous. The separate conversations seem to be working well. Being on the general discussion page makes them stand out whereas the FAQ's are out of sight out of mind. Like me. Cackle, tee hee, snicker, ha ha, TITer. Great improvements all around. Just a plain kick ass place to waste time. As long as there is a link to PACBOG classifieds (are'nt you a part of PACBOG) is there a need for a separate page? And last of all there are getting to be to many Ralphs (Ghosts and Guzis), fix it :-)

Ed.: Well... the intention is to have the FAQ pages become an organized and permanent resource of correct concise answers to common questions (I just need to wade through all the archives and assemble the various FAQs and their answers). The subtopics on the GDB are envisioned to acommodate new questions and maintain the threads of interesting topics of discussion. The will eventually get archived.

Unfortunately not everyone is psychic enough to share the BADWEB master plan, so we end up with random questions posted in the infant FAQ pages and technical questions posted on the GDB main page instead of in a new topic and ... !@#%@% it! The best thing about this board is the spontaneos interaction and overzealous pontificating all in the name of good camraderie and Buell motorcycles. So whatever and wherever anyone wants to post is fine with me.

Au Contrare. I think serious posts should be addressed in a specific sections. The general discussion page is just that. Those weather postings are meant for everyone(in jest) not SOCAL'ers. They already know what the weather is like. Same thing with stories. That story of Ferris' was awesome. Why post it on the regional page? The only people reading it then would be the people who it was about. We have a GREAT banter going on there. Why mess it up? If you want to get down and dirty about Lube Oil,etc post it on its' own section. Some people really don't want to read about oil, or tires. I can't imagine any one with a sense of humor not wanting to read a Dr. Steve post or a Ferris story or a Court tale.
Just a thought. big j

Blake, Court and Erik,

Here is an idea. Get the service manual files from Buell, convert them to HTML, and JPEGs, and post them as a knowledgebase of FAQs. The 1996 service manual is still available as PDF files on the Buell web site, but nothing has been done like that since.

Then have discussion areas surrounding each major topic area.

Just a thought....

IMHO, if you do a chatroom, all the useful information will end up in a sea of chatter, and won't get posted on the BB. Also, it will be way more than you can archive.

If everybody rides more and chats less, we'll all learn more about our bikes!!

Tom, Jim:

Thanks for taking time to suggest improvements to BADWEBs format. I thought the same thing about implementing reverse chronological ordering of board posts and had been asked previously to implement this; at that time it was not possible. With the new version of the BBS software we are now running, implementing reverse chron is now possible, and in fact I had initially set-up the GDB in this way. I quickly realized however that it was a mistake for the following reasons.

1. It is definitely most desirable to read the posts in chronological order. In order to follow discussion threads chronologically on a reverse chron page, you would still have to scroll down till you came to the last post you had previously viewed, granted not all the way to the bottom, but still scrolling non-the-less.

2. In order to post you would still have to scroll to the bottom of the page (it is not possible to relocate the "Add a Message" window), and this would make referring to any post you might be addressing very cumbersome. You would either have to scroll back and forth over a significant distance, or open a new browser window for the same BBS page.

3. I feel that the natural process of reading down a page is better acommodated with a normal chron format. For a reverse chron page one would read down a post then have to scroll up to read the next one and so on. For long posts (Andy, Doc, Ferris, Big J, Me...) you would have to scroll up to the top and then scroll down to read it, then scroll back up to the next post. It can really get to be a major scrolling pain in the @$$.

4. Bravo Jim!! The username and pw feature now implemented (as Jim points out) makes browsing BADWEB way too easy!! Click on the new message of interest and the BBS takes you directly to that post! USE THE NEW MESSAGES UTILITY!!!! Especially if you edit your profile preferences so that clicking on one of new message links opens that page in a new window. Simply edit your profile and check the box in the preferences section next to "Open "New Messages" links in a new browser window". Make sure you have "cookies" enabled in your browser for this to work properly (the cookie saves the time and date of your last "New Messages" check.

5. As to the Web TV problem. I unfortunately can only try to keep the page lengths down to 300KB or less (Tom, can you tell at what size the pages cease to fully load on Web TV?). That is not a big page really. Web TV needs to address their defficiency in those regards (Tom, have you asked the Web TV people about this?).

6. Tom, I really want to get you working properly on the BBS. Let me know what the Web TV people say. I'm pretty sure they will be able to fix your problem.

Thanks,

Blake

Perhaps this isn't the right section for this but...

When I go into the General discussion area and move the slider down to the bottom of the page, Netscape crashes. I have not been able to see the latest messages for a few days now. It was working last week.

Hmmm, this used to happen to me before I upgraded from NetScape 3.x to Netscape 4.x. MSIE has never had any problems and it will remember your pw for you too. And sometimes it is better to wait for the page to finish loading before scrolling.

Hope this helps, sorry for the trouble.

Since today is the anniversary of the website, how
about doing an anniversary CD of the whole site?
Index it and you could find any thing instantly.
I'd pay $10 - $20 for such a CD, and I'm sure most others would as well. There is a wealth of information and knowledge in here.

Hi Blake,
First of all congratulations to your awesome site. You are really doing a great job here. My only recommendation would be to separate the GDB from the "Conversation" topics. That way the browser does not have to reload the whole GDB every time you go from topic to topic.

Keep up the great work
Frank
P.S. The $1000 check is in the mail

Frank: Rather than clicking on the subtopics, try right clicking on them and choosing "Open in New Window". That way you won't have to reload the GDB every time. Cool eh? Even better, try using the New Messages Utility to show what pages have new messages posted since your last check (gotta have/use a username and password for this to work most effectively).

Blake

PS: I'm still waiting on that check .

What do I need to do to get my profile to show up? It was posted 2 weeks ago and is still not displayed.

Right Click on your name/username shown in the blue typface above. Choose "Open in New Window" and Voila! There's your profile, pic and all. The "Personal Profiles" page was created prior to the BBS upgrade and the ability for registered BADWEBr's to create/edit their own profile.

Thanks for taking the time to register and create a profile. The new user profiles are nice since they allow others to view details about our bike(s) etceteras without having to list them in each post.

Ciao,

Blake,

The best thing you could do for this board, as it's getting quite busy, is to switch to something like ATC is using. It uses threads to make following things easier, it's got the newer articles at the top, and you don't have to download the whole thing just to see the latest stuff. Better still would be to start an 'alt' newsgroup, and let the news servers handle it, though not all ISP's accept the 'alt' hierarchy.

And keep the website for stuff which doesn't lend itself to the 'newsgroup' format. Enduring documentation, photos, links, etc.

Blake and John Kirby,

Something strange is happening to the list of new discussion messages. You are getting two or three messages listed that are the same. When you go into the discussion, however, there is only a single post there.

Also, whenever I use "New Messages" or "Last Day," I'll click on a message I want to see and get thrown in on Aug 12....

When I submitted my message, I got a warning indicating that there was a server problem. I went back, did it again, and I ended up with 3 messages
