Hey guys, my bike shop which builds and services choppers just picked up a s1 lightning for drag racing. The plan is to put it in our mutant frame. For now, we figured we got a good month or two to play around with the bike as is. We took it to Great Lakes Wi. last Thursday. After about 15 runs, the average time came out to be 12.3, with a best of the night of 11.9. Not too bad for the first time out. My question is, without putting a lot of money into this frame, is there anything that could help keep the front wheel on the ground? We were thinking of making a strut to replace the rear shock, does it help? If so, should we make it longer to lower the bike? Also, has anyone tried lowering the front end in the trees? It looks like it has about a half inch before it would hit the bars. I know it may handle like crap on the street that way, but we just want to drag it. |

HDS10 - Was there as well with an X1. Strut helps a bunch. Just take the shock off and lower the bike on a jack to the height you want, then take a measurement. I use stock car a-arm struts for suspension struts as they are adjustable to some extent. You can only go so far dropping the front end down if you keep the stack handlebar set up. I went with road race clip ons on top of the triple clamp and just dropped the forks in the trees. the forks on the X1 are constant diameter right to the fork seal, so its easy to do. Generally the lower you go in ride height, the better. These will help a lot, maybe get you in the mid 11's. The real thing that will help is an extended swing arm. 6" - 7" works well on the S1 chassis. the swingarm was worth about 1/2 second on my bike over its best strut and lowered time. You could also go with a wheelie bar. I don't like them but you can definitely go quick with them. Stop by next thursday and say hi if you are there. I run the black X1 with orange stripes on the wheels. WFO |

Hey Hurricaneleah , thanks for the info...I guess we'll see how the week goes, we may be too busy at the shop to make any mods. We'll be out there for the last all bike night on the 20th. See ya there. (Message edited by hds1o on September 09, 2007) |
