As the midwest winter has started thawing out I'm on the hunt for an enclosed trailer for the upcoming race season. I'm thinking new unless I find a screaming deal on a used unit.

A good friend has let me use his open trailer but with several overnight and multiple day events planned for this summer, I think I'd sleep better with an enclosed unit, not to mention it will double as a spare garage when at home.

I'll be carrying one race bike, generator, spares and gear. What size and brand do you guys use/recommend? I'm pulling with an '06 Chevy crew cab, 5.3 liter with tow/haul option. I realize size is relative but I'm just getting started so I dought that I need a 42' gooseneck. Yet!!

Ralph, go with at least a 6X10, V-nose is even better. I have a 6X12. Not the V-nose thought. It has plenty of room for 2 bikes, generator, spares, pit bike, tires, etc. It even doubles as a "camper" at the track.
Just about any manufacturer is good. I went with the double doors instead of the ramp. This way I can leave the back open without having a ramp door to trip over.

Somewhat off topic but...

With the increased number of stolen trailers reported in Roadracingworld.com, make sure you give a lot of thought to security. I'm sure there is a website out there that has great tips that will help you ensure that you will not loose everything that you have.

Go for something in the 6 x 10, 6 x 12 range. Empty weight is in the 1300-1400 pound range. I tow a 6 x 12 with my 5.3 Chevy crew cab (2wd) with another 1000# of stuff inside down the highway at 75/80 all day long and get 12 mpg. Yeah, I could go slower and get better mileage, but whats the fun in that?

I prefer a ramp door on the back, side man door, torsion bar axle and a roof vent.

The single axle trailers aren't bad to tow, double axle trailers may be a little better to tow, but usually the weight difference is a deal killer to me. My father has a 7 x 12 dual axle and empty is tips the scales at 2400#.

You could go to a camper trailer place and get a pull out awning installed for some shade.

Rocketsprink, thanks for the input, I've been leaning toward 16' but it now sounds like overkill.

Eboos, I have noticed a large number of "trailer stolen" reports in Roadracing World! I'm studying thief perventitive measures for this upcoming purchase.

Toona, thanks for the info, my crew cad is 2wd also and I thought a single axle might be a better way to go, thanks! Do you tow in tow/haul mode or in third gear?

Tow/haul, if I remember to push the little button....., rarely 3rd. If I notice it down/up shifting a lot, I'll pull it into 3rd, but that doesn't usually happen.

RRW is coming out with an article on securing trailers.

Think motion sensing alarms (cheap but loud), axle locks and tongue locks.

Check the racing BBS's - there are almost always trailers for sale there with pics.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

I was patience and a deal popped up. A local quad racer who is going big time put his 6x12 trailer up for sale at a local cycle shop and since I had a lot of feelers out I got several calls from friends to check it out and I bought it tonight.

It's a V-nose which is a plus, side door but has barn doors so I'll have to buy an aluminum ramp. I can't complain since I got it at a very good price and it's silver, my truck just happens to be silver, also.

One last question, is there an advantage to put radials on a trailer verses the factory bias plys?

Gearhead just make sure they are TRAILER rated tires, there is a difference.
