Just a thought, but you don't have to have the team picked before talking with them. ; )

We will not be sponsoring any team(s), and no we are not just thinking of the Hal's team.

We can certainly administer our own private contingency award program, could we not? How on earth could the AMA stop us from giving awards to Buell racers? The idea is to support and encourage Buell racers in AMA FX. If that means we don't get a sticker on the bike, that is secondary. Can AMAPR prevent teams from putting a sticker on their bike?

So we have to administer the program ourselves, doesn't sound like too tough a scenario to me.

What am I missing? Where am I wrong?

Thank you Anonymous for speaking up on this. If you have any suggestions that you'd care to make, please do so.

I agree Blake.
If we take care of it ourselves can the AMA prevent us from giving the money away? I doubt it.
Shouldn't be that hard. If we do it for FX racing only, which is how this started, we will have 3 or so bikes/teams to keep track of.
Jeez, even I could do that.

Do some $$ for top placing Buell(extra for a podium!)
Less for 2nd
less for 3rd
Yeah, that would be too hard to figure out.

By the time this gets figured out it will be the 2006 season! I wanted to sponsor "Lemon Head Racing" anyway.

Lemon Head Racing has no chance of winning this year though. Course with $4000 that could make a hell of a difference in their budget.

$4k is about what it'd take to cover expenses for a race weekend at Daytona if you don't break anything.

Sheeit - DIRECT costs - tires, fuel, fees are more than $1500. Add to that all the other costs of running a race out of town, I'd be surprised to find it can be done for less than $4 Grand

If we do a straight sponsorship, we just decide where the money goes and then just do it.

Heck, we can ask each team to compose a BADWEB theme song and the one that Court likes best (without beer) wins the pot.

Since contingency fees are based on the assumption that the advertiser is getting value by being named in all programs and in all the PR announcements and since I don't see any value to Badweb in that (peraonal opinion only) - sponsorship may make the most sense but then... how to decide???

Dana,
Please reread my first couple of posts on this thread.

Steve,
Due to potential conflict of interest with board sponsors, we will not be looking to sponsor any FX race team.

Thanks all for your enthusiasm and support on this. Let's all spread the word, hit up our local dealerships and Buell riding buddies.

Just a thought, why not just get some "nice" Badweb stickers and give them and the $$ to competing teams for the first couple of races, the photos in various publications will have the stickers in them. And as said earlier just the costs to get to the races are high, lets get the Buells in the races and let the teams do their thing. Just a thought.....then as the teams progress we can have a banner on the site for further donations to keep our support up for them.

Blake, I for one am willing to take on some duties on the 'contigency' group. Once we've figured out what each 'duty' is, such as; tracking the teams in each race, contact with teams that are up for contingency, administering the funds, distribution of funds, logo stickers (maybe we could get each team to 'buy' two stickers, and a patch for the leathers and roll profits from that into the fund?) and patches - production and distribution. What else? I'd love to let the teams know that even if we're not in the stands, or turning wrenches with them we're pulling for all of them and want to reward those that do well and encourage them to continue to improve.

I don't think us (BadWeb) sponsoring a single team would say we were 'supporting' Buell racing. What it would say to me is BadWeb thinks only these guys can win, they are in some sort of business and are 'buying' into just this team, not all of Buell. Does that make sense?

Does anyone else have problems with us as a group rewarding teams that do well on a Buell? Isn't that what we want, as many Buells as possible out there, riding and hopefully winning?

Just some thoughts.. OK, I'm back to lurking for a moment..

Later,

I believe the AMA can and will prevent you from running with stickers from a contingency program that is outside their control. I know that used to be their policy. Now if you sponsor a team directly, they can't question that. It's a business policy from their perspective, and I'll bet Nascar is the same.

I believe the AMA can and will prevent you from running with stickers from a contingency program that is outside their control.

That would be my guess too. Nascar controls what goes on the cars, football has rules on what can be worn, etc etc. It sounds way to simple to be able to simply skirt the AMA deal of them handling contigency money in the manner suggested.

I say go to the races, buy a t-shirt or 3 from the team you want to support & cheer them on.
I wouldnt want to slight either Hals or Hobans so I plan on getting shirts from both of them in Daytona.

Hmmm...

I'm all for the AMA, but what would we do in that case? Promise to buy really expensive T-Shirts? I don't mean to be looking for a way around the red tape, but it doesn't seem that we can really afford to pay their fees. Does Buell have a contingency plan for FX? If so... Can we just give the money to Buell's contingency fund for AMA? Is that a good choice?

"I say go to the races..."
Sounds real simple. Ain't so for many of us.

Here's my idea, raise enough so that the AMA fee is not an issue.

Come on people! Get the word out. If we can raise a decent 5 figures the fee becomes fairly insignificant.

You want small time, or real meaningful contributions to the Buell AMA FX effort?

I want meaningful. Who's wealthy enough to blow this issue out of the water? I say we go for $50K and don't stop until we get there.

Is it an idea to set threshold for the contingency plan? If the money raised reaches the "decent 5 figures", we take the contingency route. If it stays below the threshold we go the sponsorship route.

How many Buell race teams are we talking about that have a realistic change of winning? Can we have their names listed? Maybe we can run a purely informal pol on those teams just to check the thoughts on which team to sponsor, I suspect we agree more on a single team than we all asume. Realistic choices are limited I would think. All I hear is Hal's and Hoban's.

Blake....I think you need to answer some of the questions being asked before people are willing for part with their hard earn $$$$.

How about you get a real game plan together. Then we can start getting serious about collecting some moneys. I'm willing to help with time and some dough. I just want to know the who, what, where and hows before opening the purse strings.

Just my humble opinion.

According to Barnes, Kosco/Innovative is no-go for the FX series (wonder if they'll try Daytona just for the PR??)

I think Josh Bryan from Tigershark Racing may try to make it. He came down to Willow last month and their beast of an XB has potential. He kicked butt in the heavyweight twins class (3rd - not bad against the Ducati's with home track advantage) He's the Pacific Northwest Pirelli race tires guy and Tigershark is racing the Latus-sponsored bike.

They've shoe-horned a 6-speed Buell, 1340 motor in there with some mods have put in a nifty high-mount exhaust of their own design. Josh has promised some pics.

They're boasting of huge power - but we'll see.

I haven't heard of any other teams.

I think he did. Raise enough money to do a real contingency program.

It is not like he asking you to send in a check and he will decide what to do with it. He is saying lets get enough pledges to make this work. If we dont' get enough pledges than we can worry about plan B. Until we get that far no one has given anyone any money.

I'm in for 100 bucks for the contingency plan, what are you in for? If that plan doesn't nhappen and I don't like whatever alternative is presented than I don't send a check.

Simple.

Simple.

Well put. A "good" plan now trumps a perfect plan following the season.

We are off to a GREAT start. Dennis has the data captured, we have the "big picture". Just need to "put wheels" on the idea.

Has the phrase "JUST DO IT" been taken?

On top of my pledge, I'll buy the stickers...

Blake,

I put these together in order to approach you about merchandising for Badweb. I'm no dealer, just have a love of Badweb and a friend with a vinyl print machine and screening business. My proposal is this: I place an order with my friend for these stickers, say 100 of 'em. Badwebbers pay enough for them to cover material cost and a little for the printer; all excess to go into the contingency fund... What do you say?

My friend said he'd go as low as $3 a sticker. So if we charged $5, $2 of each sticker would go to the fund. It's not a lot, but it's a start. Add other products to your "online BWB catalog" and you'd be making a lot more.

Just asking your blessing on this trial run for the fund before I go using the hallowed BWB front page emblem...

Besides...they look great on! Don't mind that this one is a little worn from throwing my leg over...

Court...that's what I'm trying to get at. We have NO PLAN at this point. If Blake is serious about making a go of this, he needs to step up to the plate with a plan. This should almost be written up like a business plan because really what it amounts to. The simple equation is: the more exposure Blake gets for BadWeb (sponsoring a Buell racing) equals more people on BadWeb equals more sponsorship money for the site.

One of my serious work mottos is:
Plan your work; Work your plan

Now lets see the plan.

Appreciate the thought and effort, but the stickers are a no-go at this time. Please do not replicate the BadWeB trademark without permission. If you have loose ones laying around, would you please send them to me?

BadWeatherBikers.com

Thanks.

Dennis (Lake),
Your hard nosed mangerial aptitude and enthusiasm are appreciated, but as Dave and Court tried to communicate the plan is to generate 5-figures and submit the entire sum to AMAPR in a formal Buell contingency program. We'll make it. I'm not at all interested in trying to promote this site in any way other than via friendly word of mouth and through having it show up on google.

What I am interested in is helping to provide incentive to Buell racing teams to compete in AMA FX.

So the plan is...

Raise mo-money! I mean... show me the money! I mean... get out and get the money!

Meanwhile I'll be in contact with AMAPR and will hammer out the deal and have stickers made for the bikes and all that great stuff.

I may even get in touch with the folks at RRW to see if they have any suggestions/comments.

Steve,
We have pics of the Latus Superbike on the site somewhere. Pretty cool how they routed the exhaust. Was all set to follow their exploits last year but I lost track of them. They were saying that they were looking to do some FX racing last year but never made it.

As far as the Kosko effort goes, are you absolutely sure they are not planning any effort this year. Last I heard they found a partial sponsor and were going to be able to make a good portion of the season though not all of it. All the while hoping to garner more support as the season progresses. That is as of two weeks ago or so. I could be totally wrong by now. Again. : b

I've read about ever post on this thread, and I agree with Lake. There is NO plan. Money is to be donated and forgotten about, it seems. Every idea everyone else comes up with, Blake, you just shoot it down. Yet I haven't seen idea one out of you, at least not set in stone. Personally I think it's a super thought, but it needs to be put into action. I wouldn't ask for money until there is a solid plan. Believe me, it WILL turn people off to the idea. That being said, IF you finally figure something out and get it in writing, I'm in for $100 smackers. Great idea, but get something DONE!
