Yamaha had better make sure they offer up an R1 for Rossi, otherwise Aprilia likely would jump at the chance to put him on an RSV4.

Didn't Rossi already prove his skill versus Baylis in head-to-head racing in MotoGP?

Sure would be an interesting event though. I'll sure be watching.

The British press, caught off-guard, is playing down the story today, like they always do when they miss one.

The British press have reported the facts rather than meaningless conjecture. They quote:

'a Fiat Yamaha representative said: “Valentino has given a couple of interviews since Valencia where he has spoken of his passion for World Superbikes and how much he enjoys that series. There is no doubt that it would be a very exciting and epic battle, but there is no plan by Yamaha to let Valentino race in World Superbikes."

This whole story has come about because Rossi mentioned that the WSBK series is currently more exciting to watch than MotoGP, that's all. Since then the Continental press have been inventing all kinds of stories borne from this 'off the cuff' remark.

No quotes from Bayliss or Ducati either in relation to this story?

If Rossi were to push hard enough it could happen of course, but to risk serious injury the month before the start of the 2009 MotoGP season would be frankly ridiculous.

And Rossi is enough of a nut job and sportsman to do it...I mean that with the highest possible respect. Like everyone else, it would be tremendous. WSBK rules. Rossi definitely rules.

And from Yamaha's point of view--how much would they love the attention on the brand new R1 if this came to fruition?

Didn't Bayliss run away with his last GP win as a wild card at Valencia in 06? The Ducati has been stupid-fast in both 990 and 800 forms, but in the early years it seemed a bit harder to control. When the electronics package got better, it seemed that Bayliss could run with the best of them. Or maybe his wild card ride was just a fluke.

Best race EVER was still the Edwards-Bayliss season-ending WSB race, when Colin was the RC51. (2003?)

I'd love to see a race like that with Rossi, Bayliss, and Haga.

I'm drooling over the prospect of Rossi, Bayliss and SPIES running together in WSBK. The difference between Bayliss in MotoGP vs. Rossi in WSBK is that Bayliss has ridden in MotoGP before.

At least the track would be familiar to the two of them. But Bayliss would definitely have the advantage, as he is MORE than familiar with the Ducati 1098R. Has Rossi ever ridden the YZF-R1 beyond the Yamaha intro in Las Vegas earlier this year??

Good points. But Rossi is more than capable of riding a bike. He'll bring in his crew, and they will make short order of setting it up. That's the life of a professional motorcycle racer.

As for Spies being in the mix? Spies is competing for a run at the championship. That's a lot of races. To take extraordinary risks in one event, well, it's not a track day. It's racing. Bayliss is in the position of really having nothing to loose. Rossi could certainly be taking some big risks too outside his contractually obligated challenge.

That is why they get paychecks after all.
