More questions on the non-S&S bike:

Was the owner an owner/rider?

Did he have to make any qualifying runs or was he already licensed for those speeds?

That Goodyear rear tire on his bike on the landracing.com site looks like a drag slick, is it?

Sometimes being secretive brings more attention than not being so.

I realize the current Elves bike is an S2, but was the rear tire on the RR narrower? If so, would the narrower tire be an advantage on the salt?

Foolish question here:
If someone were to run a couple of engine sizes in a bike on one frame, could you just leave a just run engine in the impound after a run and wheel the chassis over for the other class's engine install and run again?????

My brain hurts from thinking about your question. Me thinks you're underestimating how logistically difficult that would be, regardless of whether it would be allowed. You have your hands full already, adding something like that would likely hurt your effort more than help it, I sure wouldn't try it.

My brain hurts from coming up with the question in the first place. :)

I'm thinking of safetywired quick-release bolts or DZUS (industrial sized).

I think that RR is out of my current price range (especially considering tires are out of my current price range). That would be sweet to ride that RR in the 100th Anniversary parade next summer here though.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. We are running in p-pp, which really restricts you on engine mods. The thought was to do a motor swap to run in more performance oriented classes. USFRA and SCTA were really negative on the whole idea as their inspection process sort of depends on motor and chassis as one unit for the event. They did not actually say we couldn't, but were real negative. Motor swap would be a whole new entry fee, not a class change fee also.

If drag racing is too bland for you, consider this: S&S might add salt to the 160 engine, for an attempt at a new partially-streamlined land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It's rumored that the bike's wind fairing has undergone wind tunnel tests by a major university that specializes in aerodynamics theories (U.S. Air Force Acadamy?). The goal is speeds in the 240 MPH range. Or so our spies tell us.

What an incredible performance, but after seeing how focused you folks were it's not all that surprising. Great job.

Team Cooked Goose struggled with jetting and atomospheric conditions all week. We'd jet for early morning runs at 3800 feet and by the time we'd get to run it had increased to 5800 feet. Our best run was over 152 but we never were able to back the good ones up. We had anticipated running near 160 but it never happened. We have never had either bike on a dyno so we were also experimenting with shift points. Next year they hit the dyno before the salt.

Again, congratulations to Team Elves!!!!

Hi Sheldon....I certainly was watching you folks from the web back in Ohio....as you ran on the 1000 cc P/PP record. You did have a good run with that bike in MPS??

You know, you guys & us, SLRT, will certainly have other " fires in the hole" next year with the Buell Firebolt's. I was really surprised none ran this year & was hoping at least one would.

Hope you all had a fun good time at any rate, I missed being out their for the meet for sure but we blew our wad driving out for the cancelled Sept. meet. Oh well, we still can't predict the weather very well...can we!

I'll be at Maxton for the ECTA runs this weekend but not with my bike...helping a couple other Team guys out. Hopefully, I may get to see Sydney again their.

Some news,

You might want to check out the March issue of IronWorks. It has a 5 page article on Brian Perkins Bonneville bike along with 10 photographs of the bike (MFP 1650). Since some were asking what the bike looked like at Bonneville (since it had fairing) this will give you a pretty good idea since it's in its' no faired format.

There's also another 5 page article on "Inside Bonneville" (about the Dennis Stemp dream come true Bonneville bike). Of course photos are available as well.

Question:

Hopefully TeamElves has something going on in the background, with coverage and photos as nice as this article. With all the writing skills and tallent available here, I'm surprized it isn't in the rags already. Court, what'z up?

Jim, we are pretty much at the mercy of the editors. We sent out the press releases with pictures and all we can do is wait.

In a case like IRONWORKS they seem to have had a Bonneville article in the works so we got the small ink.

We have had bad luck all three years, Americna Rider was real interested, so interested that they sent the editor out to Speed Week. They would only run one LSR story so we got a small sidebar.

Same story happened with Cycle World, Kevin Cameron covered Speed Week.

Not doing Speed Week lowers our exposure but helps are racing. (And is much more comfortable) It's a trade off.

I am hoping for a few inches in American Rider in the next issue and also more a decent amount in Easyrider.

Actually Easyrider is one of the largerst circulation "bike" magazine out there so that will be good exposure for us.

Jim..unfortunately...us Grass roots Race Teams get the lil article Like Team elves had...The SPortster List race Team could only get these same small articles...no matter...when you are associated with one of the guru's in the "Industry"...you're gonna get some more..ala the Perkins spread & Carl's speed shop.

I sent Ironworks some info about LSR racing 2 years ago...they never would put anything in their rag..other than the 2" square articles buried in the back. Next thing we know they are building their own LSR bike & it's now all the rage in their bike rag...just different timing concerning different people...Team Elves or ourselves could get bigger, better articles in the future...now that their editor is focused on LSR...but the Industry people, (who pay the bills) will always stand out more.

Team Elves association with Nallin Racing & Cyclerama will help them out in the long run.....eventually.....I forsee their will be articles galore on LSR stuff in Ironworks now...they will be attending Maxton again at the end of March trying to bring their speed numbers up on the "Bonnivillian", then they will attend the "BIG" event in August versus us garage guys who opt for the less crowded venues.

Team Elves has done pretty well but it is hard to get a feature article of any sort in the major mags. For example, American Rider.

I am pretty good buddies with the editor and have done a bit of work for him. He is a huge racing fan and has given us some good ink BUT he knows and his boss knows that his readership is not interested in racing.

Readership surveys show that for his readership some tiny single digit percentage of readers has any interest in racing. They continue to give it the coverage they do 'cause he thinks it is important but he has to limit the coverage to a very small amout of total space each year or he gets heat from the publisher.

Same this is true at a big mag like Cycle World. They know exactly what percentage of readers want to read each type of article. That's why the monthly racing story is buried in the back with the discount house ads. Then road racing gets the most inches, followed by motocross and than drag racing and flat track. Other types and events get the occasional 5 inches of space. Unfortunatly LSR competes with ice racing, speedway, sidecar motocross, etc. for those 5 inches so we will never get a lot of space.

Did Aaron et al do the Team Elves LSR thing for notoriety or because it was something worth doing? Did the article on Perkins mention that he got his butt kicked in MPS-PF? Any writer worth his salt (pun intended :]) should recognize the value of introducing a story involving heated competition. ohwell

By nature, I'm the curious and outspoken type, so I can’t change that fact. I’m also not trying to play down Brian Perkins effort or anyone else’s. I also realize there’s a 3 month lag time for the rags. Even though it’s not my job, I sincerely care about Team Elves itself, their efforts and the exposure they do or don’t receive. I’m not standing here on a soapbox preaching that I’m the only one that cares either, rather the only one saying anything. I'm a touch baffled with this whole situation. It’s quite difficult for me to believe that Team Elves isn’t able to get better coverage or (notice the or) even a full featured article in a major magazine considering its’ grass roots operations and accomplishments in the last 3 years. Especially when one considers the heritage of the bike, it’s developer/designer, the connections we supposedly have, the sponsorship of Team Elves hooligans in the 130mph and 150mph and the fact that Team Elves was the first HD powered motorcycle under 1650cc’s to break the 200mph barrier. This isn’t some hype story, rather an important milestone in the Bonneville history book for Team Elves, HD, Buell and the hooligans Team Elves introduced to Bonneville.

Are you telling me that in the last 3 years, Team Elves has put together a full-featured article, similar to Perkins and distributed it to all the motorcycle rags? I think someone has dropped the ball.

Notoriety - I have an S2 in the garage that displays Team Elves proudly on the tank cover. I bet the "outlaw harley" mags would love some story about a wild police chase. The police would probably even tack 10-20 MPH onto whatever speed I could reach, "150? what are you talking about I was doing at least 170!"

Before a few jump in here and try and tear my ass apart, I totally understand that it wasn't, nor isn't, Aarons character to strive for notoriety. I wasn't talking about Aaron in the first place, rather the "group" called Team Elves. Wasn't or isn't there an Exposure Plan in place? I seem to recall the bike being displayed in Vegas. Seems something was thought of, why not more?

I sent off feelers to all the HD performance mags also,with no replies.Thought someone would be interested in hi-perf Buells.I actually had more interest from one of our local news channels.I was doing the Jerry Lewis Telethon thing with our firefighters union group and a news anchor saw my Team Elves shirt,bent my ear for about 1/2 hour about racing.If I ever get off my ass I am supposed to send info to him--may pan out.
