Bruising from S1...not used to riding a rail. My arms aren't long enough to get back on the 'thicker' part of the seat. The rear sets give me just the right angle to be most unconfortable. It just takes some gettin' used to.

AND I got scolded...Wes' bike puts out 164hp not the reported 156...EXCUSE me...so many hp #'s zinging around here, makes it hard for me to keep track.

Just check the Speed week results and congrats to Tanis Hammond. She got her 300 mph hat. She has been just shy of that mark for some time so I am sure she is very very happy.

Interesting results so far ...

- Nobody seems to be contesting any of the Team Elves held records, at least not yet. We had a couple folks going after them last year at Speedweek, one team was even incorrectly credited with breaking one, until we clarified a little 5mph error in the record book. I expect a strong challenge from the Guzzi boys at World Finals, though, they're finding more speed in their bikes all the time. If they get it, it's theirs, the RR1000 is retired.

- Buell Brothers continue to struggle in their effort to retake 1350 P-PP from the Guzzi ... they've gone much faster with that same bike before. There's another team trying for the record as well, apparently with a Harley, having about the same luck.

- A team called "Rose and Sperry" set a 650cc M-PF record yesterday morning, a class of interest to me ... these folks ran a 126 1/4 speed (!) on Saturday with a turn-out, then ran 120 to qualify on Sunday, then ended up with a 110.686 record and they made no more qualifying attempts yesterday. Sounds like they're fighting problems.

- There's a "Geo. Clark" competing for Team PDC's 500cc P-PP record of 113mph, but he has yet to break 100.

- Tatro is out there running against their own 500cc MPS-PF record of 116.684 ... they showed a 119 1/4 speed but apparently had problems and ran 82 for the mile. That's the only pass they've made.

- A team called "White Heat 2" is running a 500cc MPS-PG bike against Team PDC's 115.695 record, so far the best they've run is 107's.

- "Gordon Menzie" is also running against Team PDC's 500cc MPS-PG record of 115.695, he's got as close as 115.0 but that was last Saturday and he's been struggling since.

- "David Brown" has been running a 500cc M-PG bike ... Sunday he qualified with a 114.5 pass against a 113.0 Triumph-held record, and yesterday he snagged it and the new record is 116.276.

Wish I knew what kinds of bikes all these are.

Still lots of time for new entries to show up, the event runs through Friday.

Only from active racing, never from our hearts. The RR has, once again, done what it needed to do.

Aaron...I think they have a lot of wheel spin going on or something..I seen saw where Joe Amo is off slightly on his 1000 cc non push rodded bike.

I can understand Buell Bros running lower speeds in Production Class than they did last year, but they seem way down to me. All this makes me want to field a 1350cc P/PP bike in Sept now. I couldn't get my own ready in time though...It's far from Production now. Thats a 151 & some change record...I think my Sportster could get real close. (Not last years race bike)

Lone Eagle is running a 1000 cc Ironhead on Nitrous...had one turn out...thats all I've seen on him so far, Dad Land from the XL-List. More to come for sure later this week.

Joe ran 221 with his Kawasaki on Saturday, but he broke it sometime between then and now. There's something in his commentary column about working on the motor. Last year at World Finals he ran 223.

I saw Dad Land ran over 148.7 yesterday, after a 1/4 speed of 150. Not bad on an old ironhead! But unfortunately, according to Joe's column, he's changing pistons.

Our own Paul "Madduck" Elliott will be taking a shot at that 1350cc P-PP record next month. I think he's got a real shot.

SCTA seems to be getting results up faster than Joe is ... course he's a little consumed with his racing I'm sure.

Aaron,

We are taking a real serious shot at 1350 p-pp. We also may put in a shot at 1350 m-pf by pulling off the front clip and changing some other things around. All depends on how fast we are in p-pp. The motor should be together tonite and we may try to light it up. Really starting to get pumped now. I would like to see others chasing it down too. Our crew thinks all the pushrod records should be held by Harley motors.

We should have all of the xr's back together this week. Debate rages over how fast a "fresh" XR-750 should run. Steve Morehead says he ran 137 a "few" years back, but he doesn't remember if they were running with ama carb restrictor. Skip Eaken and Babe Demay think they ought to run a little over 150 mph. There is a lot of interest in this question. We're bringing 3 that all have a podium/or win on mile tracks and they are all "fresh" and unrestricted. Scotty Parker ought to be good for a few mph and Don Camlin has been tunig for over 30 years. Were pretty hopeful that some of these records will fall in Sept.

The RR may be retired, but if the Guzzi team somehow manages to beat the record, I'm sure *someone* ;) will step up with an XB9R entry to recapture the record for Buell.

Blake,

A number of people are looking at the LSR potential for XB9R. We need Buell to introduce a slightly modified version, full fairing and 4" rear rim width. The motor has lots of potential but the giant tire out back and the lack of aerodynamics will hurt it as the frame doen't lend itself to streamlining like Aarons bodywork for the RR. It will take real cash to get a competitive fairing on that bike.

Bad_Bart,

Aaron has a huge advantage in that he won't be running at p-pp first. We have to look completely stock for as long as we are in that class. We have to find a convenient way of finding mods to get real power without re-engineering bike. Luckily for me we have three sets of heads to play with, one of which Aaron himself sold me. They look real fast. Go fast carb may be in mail today too.

Holy smokes, look what the cat drug in ... howya doin Rocketfella? Getting psyched about Bonneville? Practicing how to say "open a can of whoopass on all y'all"? Looking forward to hearing that with that thick British accent again!

Guys, I never said I was running the M2 in M-PF! Not that it hasn't crossed my mind . I dunno, it's a STREET bike y'know. Paul and Jim (Snyder) are building RACE bikes, y'know. Hmm.

Aaron,

I thought you said the s2 was "done". There's plenty of time to get another bike ready to go. Hell there's almost 6 weeks left. If you need your heads back, we can work out a deal.

Not that I am just trying to unload some slow heads.

Okay Racers. I have an extra set of dark blue decals left over from the bike I was building. They say "TEAM ELVES land speed racing" in the same style of lettering that adorns the stock S2 tank. They are sized to fit that same area and would look great on just about any Buell tank. They are free to the first racer who pings me off line.

The Blast is in pieces as we speak. Spent some quality time on the dyno with it on Sunday, then tore it apart. I've made some progress with it over the last several months, but I always believe there's more. Hope to have it back on the dyno on Saturday. I gots plenty of projects, believe me.

Don't hold your breath waiting for me to convert the M2 to a race bike. It shall remain a street bike.

Aaron,

I know that feeling. I keep looking at the last m2l sitting on the dealers floor. Man that would be nice to have, now that they aren't making any more. This racing thing has really chewed thru the budget, tho if I sell the Wide Glide I can easlily swing it, Hmmmm

Heat on the Salt:

Inspired by spending a couple of days in full leathers in close 100°F heat, I thought this is worth mentioning; for the Team/bike owners:

Keeping your rider cool and well hydrated:

1) bring one or two large umbrellas to provide shade for the rider while waiting to get to the starting line.

2) have a well stocked cooler in the support vehicle; Ice, water, Gatorade. And more important, make sure your rider drinks lots of it. In the heat, if you're not peeing every couple of hours, you're not drinking enough!!

3) Bring 2 wet towels, one draped over the riders neck, the other in the ice water in the cooler - swap the two often. The cool water and evaporation will help cool the blood in the large arteries in the neck.

4) a belt of some sort (bungie cord or nylon strap w/ quick-release buckle) will allow the rider to "get out of" the top of the leather suit and still walk around without dropping the suit around his/her ankles.

Heat exhaustion is at best uncomfortable, but at Bonneville at speed it can be life threatening. Heat stroke is life threatening all by itself ... and both *will* sneak up on you if you're not prepared. The riders will likely be focused on the ride, so it may be worth it to have someone in the crew be in charge of taking care of the rider.

A friend of mine sat out a couple of track sessions because he started to feel faint last weekend.

I have had heat exhaustion once myself - really stupid move that I will not repeat. Long ride in full gear in high heat - made it home and realized I had trouble focusing, pulse around 120 (my resting heart rate is usually around 57) and no strength or energy . That is no condition to be in for a Bonneville racer.
