I have been reading and talking to a few people about a clunky noise that I have that sounds like it is from the primary area. At low speed/rpm the bike is jerky and the noise is louder if you put the bike under load and just let the clutch out enough to move. Does this sound like there is a little to much play in the chain? Do/Should I get a new gasket for the inspection cover if I check it? Will the local HD non-Buell stealer have a gasket that will work? Thanks all for the help. Horr | ||

Horr, In my experience, too much play in the chain normally manifests itself as extra vibration. It certainly won't hurt to check it and it's not too hard to do. I believe the Sportster uses a different inspection cover gasket, but you should be OK re-using yours. If it does leak, it'll be a very small leak and the bike will certainly be rideable until you can get a new gasket. | ||

To check the primary chain... bike in neutral and cold.... take the little cover off then push up on the chain with finger...if correct it should come level with the top of the primary case window... To adjust.. loosen big jam nut on bottom of case and turn in torx screw ..retightend jam nut...all done...reuse the gasket | ||

He should also check the chain in several locations as most will have a couple of "tight" spots. Better slightly loose than too tight. |
