I looked through the service manual, and I can't find a wiring diagram for the headlights. Am I just blind? I want to add some driving lights to the Uly. My preference would be to just add them in parallel with the existing high beam headlight, so they would come on when the high beam was on. I'm trying to figure out if the headlights are already driven through a high current relay, or if I will need to add a new relay to handle the current required by the lights. Anyone know the details of the current switching arrangement? |

Jim, Appendix B, page B-21 has the headlamp and Hi / Lo switch wiring in the bottom, right-hand corner of the wiring diagram. This is the '06 Uly manual (99494-06Y). |

Jim, for optimum light output, I would recommend running the power for the lights straight from the battery (fused, of course) and set up the switching part of a relay to activate from the high beam circuit. this will eliminate the need for a switch, and allow the headlight to remain as bright as it normally would. You may put a strain on the wiring by having it carry the load for both the headlight and driving lights. |

Jlnance, it might seem complicated but I'd relay each aux lamp independently for the power and switched in tandem. Guaranteed full power to each lamp and in case of a relay failure you still have another aux lamp. Trick for helping the anemic headlights of my treasured old Audi with its DOT crap headlights. If you want I could dig into my files for a wiring schematic for the cars that would work for dual aux lamps. IIRC... Lorazepam, how's your light bar doing? Need some more light up front also, just burnt out a Silverstar after only a couple of months and I can't justify 4 or 5 per year @ $20 each... (Message edited by xbimmer on January 08, 2007) |

So far the only problem is with ducks, and the piaa 510's. He had trouble, and I sent him a spacer, and havent heard back. I am hoping that no news is good news. I personally run the euro silverstars in the headlights, and havent had any trouble in 6k miles. they are brighter than the us version, and seem to hold up fine. I have two on the Uly and one in my R80ST. great illumination, and seemn to hold up better than the regular us bulb. the bulb guy in great britan sells them on ebay, and he is great in his response time. |

Loraz, you ride a 80ST? One of BMW's best IMHO. My brother bought one, reassembled it with Ascerbis 12 gal tank, Honda-something dirt front fork with a foot+ of travel, a bunch of other stuff, halved the seat and created an offroad monster. Now that he's a KTM nut maybe I can "borrow" it from him. So what's the difference between my German-made Silverstar Osrams and the Euro-spec units I wonder? Maybe my first one was a weak link, there are several original Osram bulbs still in my R100S and it's coming up on 30 yrs old and 200k. |

Euro silverstars from osram have clear glass, instead of the blue of the us version by sylvania. The light output is a whiter light, and seems to be brighter. I will look for a thread I read on it some time back by Paul Glaves, a very smart guy in the BMW community. I would like to convert my ST to GS, but I dont think it is worth the cash to do so. I have distanzia's on it and it does well enough with them. |

Here's my Driving light setup. This way I have a switch to turn them on whenever I want... Or they come on automatically whenever I hit the high beams.
I changed the switch during the install and like it much better now... so I added that bit on the diagram. Works great for me! |

Snub, here's the link: http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/headlight-simple .htm He's copyrighted his stuff so I'll respect that. I've used lots of his ideas on my 4000S. The diagram is obviously for dual-filament bulbs, if I were to go this way each relay would operate one aux lamp, but you can see the idea. Mikef's schematic looks pretty good too! Loraz, my Silverstars are Sylvania packaged, but German-made Osram bulbs with clear glass. Even in broad daylight the beam is definitely WHITE. Much better than the stockers. This blue stuff being sold seems like hype to me. |
