How cool is this!! I took delivery of my Uly on October 1, 2005, and on October 1, 2006 (EXACTLY his one-year anniversary) he turned 20,000 miles (see pic).

And---even cooler---he turned 20K on the last day of the New Mexico BRAG rally!! Wow, it doesn't get any better...

On Saturday we three intrepid Uly riders---led by fearless leader "Spoof" (and hi Phil!) did a ride in the Jemez Mountains of NM, with some fairly interesting off-pavement content. And I---with a little dirtbike experience---was flatly AMAZED on how well the Uly does off pavement. It dealt with rocks and ruts as well---or better than---my dirtbike! I think there's a little bit of Newton's 1st Law here...

"A body in motion tends to remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force..."

And the Uly tends to keep going in the direction it's going---better hope the direction is the one you want! ; )

I was even on road tires (Avon Azaros) and the Uly always seemed to do the right thing. Tiptoeing through rocks and ruts one minute; railing through 85 mph twisties the next. Man, this bike is flat AMAZING!!

P.S. my wife credits the Uly for saving my sanity over the last year---and she's right!

BTW Doc, what's your speciality in ME? Thermo, heat transfer, mechanics of materials, machine design? What'd I miss? : )

Dr. G - That makes two.

Mine turned 1 yo today also. You have me beat on mileage though. Mine is @ 14,500 miles today. I did not ride it today though I did put on one of its birthday presents, new headlights. I switched to Silver Stars and finally adjusted the headlights to where they need to be. Pretty sad that it took me a year to get them right. Its other present is an air box cover.

Happy Birthday ULYS

My areas are dynamics, controls, robotics, stuff like that. More in "design/dynamics" rather than "thermal/fluids"...

But it's all good. My research area is robotics and automation, specifically motion control.

I love controls. Particularly classical controls. I took a modern control theory class in grad school. I learned an awful lot about matrix algebra, but I'm not sure I could actually control anything with it. : )

1 y/o tomorrow (the 4th) 28.2K mi.

Leaving next week (the 12th), for the Grand Canyon (Bar 10 ranch), then Death Valley. Should be good for over 3K miles. It'll be a great start for year number 2 on my Uly.

Congrats Dr. Greg,

I was wishing we got to ride together again Sunday since I missed out the Saturday Uly ride, but I'm happy you got to the 20k mark before returning home. I managed to catch up to the touring bike guys from AZ and we had a nice ride thru Jemez. I turned off on 126 and took that over to Cuba. That road is like "Long Way Round" packed into an hour ride. I have never been on so many different types of surfaces on one stretch of road in my life. At the West end you are rewarded with some awesome sweeping turns coming out of the mountain. That road would be the perfect Uly test ride.

It was great to meet you and I hope we get to do some riding together again. By the way, when you turned 20k, I almost turned 2k. Now that I'm back to the daily grind, I'm 5 milin' my way to 2k.
