the other day grimace was riding the orange pumpkin around and he noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine area. he said it sounded like rattling metal and it only happens under certain circumstances; the engine needs to be hot, or at least ridden in hot weather, it only happens around 3500-4300rpms under a heavy throttle and grimace doesnt know what engine knock sounds like, but he doesnt think it sounds like "tinking", similar to something rattling off. could this be his horn that needs to be flipped? could this be his missing 15hp trying to break its wasy out of confinement? could this be something actually trying to rattle off after the clowns at one harley shop boofed up his 1k check and he had to ride 5 hours to st super daveS and have his shop un-boof his uly? could this be his uly crying for mercy under his bulbous rear end? who knows, all i know is that hed like to find the cause of the problem as its getting louder and louder. btw, he cant find anything obviously wrong or about to fall off. the shop he purchased his uly from thinks 50mpg under a constant 55mph highway with NO wind is good mileage, so he is loathe to let them try and work on his beloved pumpkin. chris |

Sounds like spark knock to me. See Davo's recent post here on do-it-yourself timing adjustment. |

If you want to try to identify if it is spark knock then just put some HD fuel conditioner in and it will reduce it considerably. Also at 3500-4000 rpm if you roll on the throttle (past 35 TPS) or back off the throttle (20 TPS or less) it should diminish if it is spark knock. Spark knock is an irregular clacking or clanking or a high frequency clatter. |
