See this thread (suffer through it.) http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/205913.html?1150816060 Then ping this thread, so we can see how many of us (stock Ulysses owners) are willing to buy a custom map, that promises to fix the problem, from "whom ever" can supply one. |

Me of course, however AL doesn't think a map will help. note: People who have been installing the race kit or map/pipe combos appear to be fixed. But they are not quiet anymore. John |

So does this surging occur in open loop running conditions? |

yes, for me below 2500 rpm. |

>yes, for me below 2500 rpm. Well how do you(we) know that it's in open loop during this rpm or less. If it's anything like a car, the bike is in closed loop as soon as the O2 sensor is warmed up enough. |

I am not sure it's in open loop, it was an assumption from info I gleaned from the board. Not sure how similar Buell's F.I. is to a modern car's. Cars have baro, map and some have mass air flow sensors. The Buell F.I. has none of those sensors. |

For what is worth, installing the race kit virtually eliminates the problem. |

The race kit muffler is no longer available and the race ecm does not support the exhaust valve. I would like to use a MAP developed that may fix or reduce the problem. |

Has Buell actually come out and state they acknowledge this surging issue and are working on a fix or is it a non issue for them? |

Please stay on topic on this thread. Only looking for a head count, for those with similar complaint. A surging at slow speed, in my case 20 to 35mph, below 2500 rpm. see the link at the top of the thread post your questions or anecdotes there or see: this thread in knowledge vault on LEAN SURGE: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/186874.html?1150556917 destroy, I do not think the bike is operating out of "design specifications"; so Buell is not likely concerned... at this point. |

My bike does not have the surging problem, but instead, more of a lean condition. I would be interested in a better "Map", at a reasonable cost and with real world results. I am not into dyno chart racing with others on the Internet! |

You can add my name to the list. Mine doesn't surge, it just seems a bit lean down low and has a on/off light switch action when trying to roll-on the throttle. Makes going through slow corners or parking lot driving a bit of a pain. |

I am with Dragon Slayer. My bike coughs when it is cold which can be attributed to lean, but the dealer reset my TPS for pinging during hot condition and the low end surging is there but barely noticeable when warmed up. The Service Manager at Shelton's is great with Buells. I comfortably ride down to below 2000rpm in town with no problems. |

I would like a remap. Mine coughs when it's cold and lately when it's warm. Also started knocking under load. The fan won't run every now and then on long trips. Sounds like it's laboring. Buell tech at Americade said they've had some problems with fan's and heat. Otherwise I love riding this bike |

Remap me too! Til I read this thread I thought the bucking/lurching/surging off idle especially in hot weather was the nature of a HP V-twin. Except for the frustrating pinging problem once it's moving, everything's great once away from the on/off switch from stopped. |

How many of you guys that are experiencing this surging have mods done to the bike? Does this occur on completely stock ones? |

I hate to keep bringing up the timing issue but too much advance will create surging as well. The advance on these bikes is wound pretty tight. If you are surging and pinging and you do not have a intake man. leak and your bike is stock there is only one solution. You got to look at the "fourth dimension", time. |

Davo- my bike doesn't ping, and it doesn't have an intake leak. I do have a mild surge during low load(>< 3000 RPM)lower gear throttle openings. It's a minor annoyance in an otherwise phenomenal motorcycle. |

Thanks for the information, guys. I am thinking about getting one, and was wondering if maybe this was not something that happens until modifications are done, because I know a lot of folks modify their bikes. I am going to look for the issue when I take a test ride. Doesn't sound like it's a basic map problem, because it doesn't happen to everyone. Wonder what would make bikes run differently one to another? |

Imonabuss; from what I gather, it's the stock bikes that are experiencing the surge. People who put the race kit on have stated that the surge disappears, and their bikes run much better at all RPMs. If you don't mind making a little noise, put a race kit on (if you can find one). If, however, you're like me and prefer a Stealthy quiet bike, you'd better hope someone comes out with a fix, or just get used to it. It isn't that bad. |

Imonabuss - I wonder that too. Al from American Sport Bike is doing some experiments to try and find out. I believe he has access to one which surges and one which doesn't. Hopefully he will figure it out. |

Sounds like it could be a TPS calibration issue. |

Wouldn't adjusting the TPS one way and the other cause the overall mixture to run leaner or richer, depending on direction of adj? My point being, why not try tweeking the TPS to see if this surging goes away. Modifying or tweeking other engine inputs, such as air mass or engine temp, can result in the same effect of leaner or richer running also. |

Al is very concerned about this issue and we have discussed it several times. Both his and my ULYs have no surging issues at all, but I do have some minor pinging and am working on some minor changes to the timing tables. I am mapping his XB9 with a Drummer this week and will see what happens when I incorporate the revised timing. ... There is only so much time and so many pipe combinations, but we are getting better with each new map. ... Terry |

I have a bone stock Uly with approximately 7600 miles on it. I have no surge problem at all on my bike. It doesn't normally ping but has sometimes depending on the fuel I had to use. It is dead smooth at 2000 rpm. So it can be done without changing to an expensive exhaust and ECM. Hope this helps. |

What ever happened with the issue/request? It seemed to me that there were plently of people willing to pay for an "improved" map for a stock bike, including myself. |

Just thought I'd toss this in, I had a race ecm once that caused my 04 XB12S to "surge" around the low 3000rpms. It would run real lean and not pick up with a slow steady increase of throttle. It now runs a Badweb member's bike and he has no surging. I went back to stock ecm, no probs. So to test if the ecm is at fault, how about putting it in another bike that is known to run well? P.S. I borrowed some VDSTS software and cable to reset the AFV and TPS on the XB12S last weekend, it's a bit clunky to learn (read the instructions) but works great. Done properly in a few minutes. Good stuff. Did it from an old Palm V PDA. Much better than booking in the bike to a dealer for a whole day and paying them $70. (Message edited by opto on July 10, 2006) |
