Was wondering is any other that might be running the Drummer exhaust are experiencing any lean running sympthoms?

ie: Popping when cold, at least one stall before fully warmed up, motor doesn't die down on a downshift, rpm's don't drop fast enough.

Looking to see what the solutions are. Race EMC?. I spoke to the tech at Vallejo HD in Nor. Cal who says he can remap the emc to the bike.

Looking to see if there are other solutions before proceeding.

I've had my Drummer nearly a month. Everything else is stock. I haven't had any of the problems you mentioned

That what I'm trying to figure out. Everything was set to specs, but still the crappy running.

Would like to figure out if the problem can be solved without having the emc remapped.

Maybe someone will chime in here with so info.

Frankf,
If you are lean and have a stock ECM then check for pinging. If it was pinging could you hear it? Do a plug read look at the insulator for blistering or extreme white. Retard the timing about 3 degrees if there is any pinging or indication of lean condition.

All this talk of exhausts and remapped ECUs reminds me - whatever happened to that tuner exhaust/ECU shootout that was supposed to happen? Did it occur? I can't seem to find the thread any more (it moved a couple times).

It just took place. I contacted and spoke to Terry from Vallejo HD, in CA. He just got back from there and did a bunch of the testing with Kevin.

Now that I think about it, I'll call him and see what they found out.

In answer to you Davo, I have not heard any pinging. It just runs like crap when cold and pops thru the throttle body and shuffs itself out at the most inopertune time, like starting from a stop while making a turn.

There is also a lag in throttle response between 2k and 3k. There was a slight intake leak, but same results with that fixed.

Bike has 4k miles on it. CA charcoal canister is removed, rest is stock.

FRankf,
How about your TPS reset. Did you do it or was it done at the dealership? Some of the dealerships have reset the TPS w/o having the throttle valve completely closed. If the throttle is open at all when it is reset it will create a more lean condition than stock. I have read other threads that folks have reset the TPS again around 2500 miles after having poor performance and it was corrected.

Are you sure you fixed the intake leak? I know HD makes a Throttle body alignment tool for the M-M & Delphi systems. It would make a skosh of sense that our down draft setup would have a alignment tool.

The TPS was set at the dealership. Its been done a couple of times as this problem has been with me since new. I have to assume they know what they are doing....but on the other hand....

Same with the throttle body alignment.

I think I might try bringing it to another dealer who is more Buell friendly to see if they can solve it before remapping the emc.

If you go to a different dealer have them
recheck not only the TPS but all the ignition parameters with their ? digital technician.
If you are still unsatisfied you might want to
go ahead and get a race ECM. Mine was under
$200 from DaveS(Appelton WI) if I recall.

javadog, do you run the race ecm with the stock muffler?
does it make the low end performance any better?
I know you would have to wire open the valve, but any other things needed?

Thanks Javadog

Tell me more about the race ECM. Is it a plug and play, or does it have to be set up?

Did you change your exhaust?

What difference did you notice with it installed?

How loud is the stock exhaust with the valve wired open?

Frank,

The Original Drummer should be fine with stock ecm. Are you running an SS? The ecm will not settle in unless you go for a good 20 min run down the highway.

Popping when cold, at least one stall before fully warmed up, motor doesn't die down on a downshift, rpm's don't drop fast enough

These symptoms really do sound like the bike needs a tps reset and adjust the idle speed lower OR you still have an air leak at the inlet manifold somewhere.

OK, I'm just a simple country hick but I'll
try to explain things as I understand them.
I have the Drummer muffler and race ECM. The
muffler came first. The Drummer doesn't have
a valve, the cable is just disconnected.
The race ECM does not recognize or drive the
valve, so after it was installed I removed the cable and valve motor altogether. The combination has greatly improved the low end and midrange power and torque. I heard it explained here on this board that the race ECM
is what the Uly stock ECM should have been like, but for emissions regulation reasons
the overly lean stock ECM was mapped(and created all sorts of starting and running problems). I drive conservatively since I live in an urban area but with this set up
the response is very crisp and muscular, even going up hills. Now that I'm past 1500
miles, fairly well broken in and with synthetic oil(Amsoil MCV V-Twin 20W50) I'm
quite happy with how my motor is running.
I also installed the catch can to keep the excess combustion water out of the engine.
To get a whole lecture on the Uly engine,
fuel/air metering, exhaust and power management call Kevin at KD Fab 828-324-9991

Javadog - I have the same set-up and have similar results. However, I have a serious stutter at ~2800 RPM. Are you seeing that?

I assume it's a TPS reset thing, but haven't had time to take it in.

A couple more things: Frank-
The race ECM is almost plug and play-after it
is installed(looks very easy) you have to have a TPS reset. Fubar- yes I stutter too, but usually only when I am around pretty girls. Oh, an engine stutter! No, I have not noticed any. I'm going out soon and will pay attention but since I spend most of my cruising time between 3000-4000 RPM if there was any roughness or stuttering I would have noticed it a long time ago.
