Stay with dino until the break-in is completed. Some say switch at 1500 miles, I like to wait until 3000. Probably doesn't make much difference. (Message edited by chadhargis on October 31, 2005) |

Hey Chad I think you ment Dino oil for breakin and synthetic after 3000 miles. |

I've got both lying around the garage. I'll use the old fashioned HD until the break-in is done. Then I'm all for synthetic. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

Eor, My 12 Lightning used so much oil for the first few thou miles it was embarrassing, at one stage it used as much oil between changes as what was required for an oil change, it slowly dropped off to using hardly any. The Uly however is using very little, both motors were broken in the same. |

Just got the bike back from the dealer. They put 500 miles on it and measured approx. one ounce per 100 miles...somewhat less than what I had seen...dunno why. They suggested putting more miles on it...okay, can do . |

My 12cg was like Opto's-- very thirsty-- perhaps a quart-per-thousand at first. Then somewhere around 3k to 4k miles it changed, and now uses very little oil. But I was surprised how long it took for the rings to seat... perhaps I should have been more aggressive during break-in? (I went by the book). |

Count your blessings. My original '77 XLCR owner's manual tells me I shouldn't expect to get more than 500 miles out of a quart. The Motor Company has come a long way in 28 years. |

Yah I remember around 1977. Wasn't that when H-D was almost out of business permenantly. With that kind of attitude it is little wonder. If Buell can't do any better they will not be around long either. That would be a shame for sure. |

I've never owned a Buell, so I can't comment on the engine first hand, but it sure does seem to be the weak link in the chain for them. Can you image what Erik could do with something similar to a Ducati superbike twin? |

I prefer V Twin engines, the Uly is my 3rd V twin. Parallel twins and the 4 bangers just don't have the same character. Haven't had a chance to ride a triple. YMMV of course. Jim in Santa Barbara |

There is nothing wrong with the Buell/H-D engine in the Ulysses or any of the XB line. Strong long lasting well made, no leaks. I don't personally know a single person who has calved an engine in a Buell. |

TB, no. In 1977 Harley was selling well, the XLCR being the sole exception. The Low Rider was also introduced that year and was a huge hit. Sales were up to around 45,000 units that year, up from an average of around 15,000 units a year in the '60s, before AMF took over. Harley would reach an all time record for them of over 50,000 units in 1979. The next year the great slump began, and sales dropped to 35,000 in 1983. THAT'S when they almost went under, along with many others, and by that time they had the oil consumption problem well in hand. Late Ironheads and Shovelheads were pretty good in that respect. Their problems at that stage had nothing to do with oil consumption, and a lot to do with the slump, which actually hurt almost everyone else worse than it hurt Harley, and the enormous balloon payments due at that time from their leveraged buyout from AMF. Be advised that jumping to conclusions based on insufficient knowledge of the circumstances tends to make one look foolish. BTW, Harley sales this year are expected to surpass 330,000 units. |

I've never owned a Harley or a Buell, but I know several Harley riders who actually RIDE their bikes instead of using them as butt jewelry at the local beer joint. None of them have ever had issues with the engines or the bike. I rented a Ultra Classic just to ride a Harley (since I'd never ridden one). I have to say, it seemed very well put together, and ran quite good. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my sort of bike. To big, heavy, and slow. But for someone looking to load up a passenger and head out for a nice long cruise, it's a sweet bike. Seems like with Erik Buell's chassis, fitting a revvy, lightweight, powerful twin would be a no brainer. I wonder if Harley would ever let him work with Porsche like they did on the V-Rod. Can you imagine what they would come up with?!? |

When I read about the Buell "lump" of an engine, I wonder what is meant. Is it the weight of the motor? Is it the noise? Seems to me that the current "lump" is on par with a lot of current motors out there in terms of reliability, power and mpg. Why are our Buell motors considered lumps by so many motojournalists? |

40,000 miles on the M2. I have to put about a pint per 1,000 miles in it. That is when I am not lubing the clutch cable. The Uly made it to the 1000 mile service without having to add oil. |

When I say "lump" I'm referring to an engine. I call just about every engine a "lump" or a "mill". Just slang. |

My business partner and I rode up to Atlanta on Thursday and back today. Approximately 1100 miles in 3 days...no visible oil usage. |
