I recently sold my Uly XT and the empty space in my garage is like the hole in my heart.. reason for sale, it was just a little too big for me at my age (60's) and size 5'10" 150#. I see the xb9 listed weight is 390#, a little more manageable for me I bet.. but I want to know how the handling, geometry differs between the two.. I assume it still has the great Buell performance I enjoyed with the Uly, can you describe the difference? any years of the xb9 to avoid? there's a 06 f/s for $3500. 10k miles, new tires, belt etc.. is that only a fair deal? https://rmn.craigslist.org/mcy/5374383077.html I'm still trying to track down my old V11 Lemans Moto Guzzi, love to have that back but it's 490# with good handling but good not like Buell, WB is 3" longer than the Uly.. yet it's a far more sexy machine than any Buell I've known. and the Guzzi has 3 HB hard bags is there any way to mount Uly bags to the XB9S ? my observations here and elsewhere conclude the xb9 is more bullet proof than the 1200? is that just wives tales? theres also a xb12 STT on CL but priced too high.. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/mcy/5377665 737.html would like to have your input.. thx, Brad | ||

My XT always seamed a little large for me at 5'7". I do miss the luggage and the soft ride. The large seat and ability to move around on long trips. I am on an 08 XB12Scg now. Ride is rougher. Have to get my butt's weight off the seat for the choppy pavement and train tracks in the corner. The XT was butter through there, seated and on the throttle. I don't know that you will miss the 1203 once you start revving the 9. My Scg has a Hawk pipe, and while it sounds nice, that is down some power from the XT with OEM pipe. I'm guessing the 9 actually weighs 315 to 325 pounds. The low seat height on the Scg made a huge difference to me on perceived weight of the bike, I had to get off the XT to back it up. Not so on the Scg. A lot of what I was missing with the XT gone is filled by the Scg. Hopefully a 9 guy will be along shortly. The Luggage? I'm using Ventura racks to help out the Scg. Al at American Sport Bike sells Ventura bags, etc. ,R.D. | ||

I had a then new '05 City-X. I put the Buell race kit on it just to make it a little louder, but it made a noticeable top end difference. It was actually as quick as my '06 Uly and with the race kit the niner was faster up top. I'd say they are very comparable in power and torque feel. You will be leaning over the bars with more pressure on your hands and arms and your feet and knees will be tucked up a little higher. The wind will hold you up at speeds over 60 or so because you are more exposed to wind frontally. I loved that City-X, but when the Uly came out in '06 it was the bike I was looking for. I wanted the two up capability and luggage carrying ability for two people. I did some single over night trips on the City-X with the available bags, two soft side bags, a tail bag, and a tank bag. There was noticeably no real passenger seat for over a twenty mile ride. No moving around at all. A one up two hundred mile day on the City-X was about it. The Uly just gets it's day started at two hundred miles and has seen many days over five hundred and a few over 700 miles. Handling.....unless you have dragged pegs on the Uly you won't be near the niner's cornering limits. The suspension is shorter and as mentioned the ride is more harsh and will bottom on potholes and RR tracks, at least if you are as heavy as me(well over 230 lbs). I never really noticed the weight differences. Probably where the power to weight ratio equalizes things. I did 13,000 miles in a year on the City-X and 60,000 in the first six years of the Uly's life. I bought the Uly a year after the City-X and planned to keep both. But after riding the Uly the City-X did not come out for three months, then just for a maintenance ride. So I sold it out of just not wanting to watch it sit and rot. I had no regrets with my choice. If the Uly had not come out I would probably still own that niner. | ||

Yeah, up top the Uly does nothing at all, the 9 has to be faster there at least. Weight (combined with the lower height especially) will be much more manageable. | ||

If you want a scaled down Uly look for an XB12Ss, that's the closest you'll get. | ||

I was happy with both motors. The 9sx was a wonderful around town bike, but was lot less comfortable for a multi hundred mile trip. Doable, but not as fun. I think the 9 motor is much more reliable as well. The 12 is faster everywhere, but not by that much. If you parked both bikes at the end of the back straight at mid ohio, and went all out, the 12 would gain on the 9 at a normal walking pace (and the 12 would be shifting more often). I'm a big guy, and the 9sx was actually fairly comfortable, but I looked weird on it (it is REALLY short and small). | ||

Foto, That 9sx looks pretty nice, to me. I don't have experience with 9's, but with low miles, new tires, bat, belt, only 10k, and at that price, it looks like a pretty good deal to me. | ||

Froggy, do you mean the ever so quickly diminishing blue streak on our Westward slab run back to camp, this after the trip to the asylum(where they did not even keep one of us)? It was the fastest color that day indeed. It turned into a little red taillight dot on the horizon. | ||

Like Vern I have had a xb9cx and a Uly XT. The city x was the best handling bike I have ever owned but with my coaching duties at opposite ends of Minnesota the city x just did not have as much capacity to hold my coaching materials plus clothes and stuff for a weekend trip . We got the XT for the hard bags and 2 up comfort and it has worked well. The XT is very well suited for comfort on longer rides. Three or four hours on the city x was about all I could handle even with the select seat. |
