Installed the 2010 wheel on the bike. Used the torque, loosen and re-torque method from the service manual. My service manual is for the 2009 model so for starters I'm not sure that its correct for the three bearing wheel.
Here's what happens. When I make the final tightening of the axle (50 ft pounds)the wheel is to far to the left. The brake disk jams against the brake caliper holder and the belt rides partially off the drive sprocket and gets jammed. loosening up the axle and lining the brake disk and belt by eye allows everything to move freely. I haven't ridden it like this because I'm worried that the wheel will shift left. There's about a 1/4 in space between the left wheel bearing and the swingarm.
So basically I don't know what the hell I'm doing and would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks

Where is the spacer that goes on it?

Don't ride without the spacer.

Yea, there's a ~1/4" long black spacer that goes in the left side of the wheel. The dust seal actually rides on the outside of the spacer.

Hopefully you just dropped the spacer somewhere. They can easily fall out while you're man-handling the wheel into place to install it.

It's not too terribly detailed on installation, but the parts breakdown does show the spacer - and give it's part number:

Thanks. That should do it. Didn't see a spacer when I removed the wheel but if there was I'll find it

Ok. Checked the garage. No spacer. Also my service manual and (downloaded)parts manual don't show any spacer. Is the spacer only for the 2010 wheel?

The spacer is only for the 2010 wheel. There are no spacers for the the pre 2010 wheels.

Never mind. Checked the above link (thanks 1313) looks like the spacer is only for the 2010 wheel. Heading to the Harley dealer now to pick up parts for a different bike. I'll see if I can order it there. If not I'll try American Sportbike tonight.
Thanks everyone for your help. Love the bike but this whole bearing issue has me bummed out. Hopefully the 2010 wheel will put the issue to rest.

It should have come with the kit I think. Once you have it DO NOT forget it on removing the wheel next time as it is easy to lose.

"So basically I don't know what the hell I'm doing and would greatly appreciate any advice". Worry not Rob. It is all a learning process if you do not know the bike and you are only doing what we have all needed to do ourselves. Good luck.

Yes, it definitely comes with the kit, but would be easy to lose while unpacking or moving the parts around.

I think I may have hit on, sorry I am getting old/ slow, what the problem with this bike may be. I have had many bikes and have found that you can do most things the same way. This does not seem to be the case with this bike. It has many design features that require a different approach to its care and maintenance. Saying that though once you know about them it is remarkably easy.

Ok. Ordered a new spacer and dust seals from American Sportbike. they probably came with the kit when I bought the bearings but I don't know where they are now. Expect I'll find them when the new ones come and I have the wheel on the bike.
Anyway when I install everything I plan on "double torqueing" them but on the final tightening I'm going with Uly mans method and not tightening them to the service manual spec's. Going to line up the belt and brake rotor by eye and call it a day.
Thanks again everyone for all the advice.

"Going to line up the belt and brake rotor by eye and call it a day". They will do that fine themselves so no worry on that issue. However I have had a thought, if you are willing to participate in a small experiment, that I think would benefit us all.

This would be to fit the wheel without the brake caliper, dust seals and belt. Torque it up to the first setting and rotate the wheel to see how free it is. Back it off and then torque it up to the second setting and again rotate the wheel to see how free it is. I, for one, would be interested to know if you are able to notice any difference. If you did I would be inclined to back it off again and then torque it up to a setting that feels the best IE The most free.

Of course this is all highly un-scientific but I think it is worth trying. I do not recall it being tried before either.

I sort of did that.
Before knowing about the spacer I installed the wheel without it. I didn't spin the wheel after the first torque but did after the second torque. What happened was the brake disk jammed against the caliper holder. I removed the holder and spun the tire. What happened then is the belt kind of rolled off the wheel pulley to the right and jammed into the swing arm. I did all of this very slowly so nothing was damaged. Still not knowing about the spacer and trying to figure out the problem I loosened the axle until the belt was lined up and reinstalled the caliper holder. Wheel spun really nice at that point but the axle wasn't tight. That's when I noticed the space on the left where the spacer goes.
Anyway the spacer is coming on Tuesday but I probably won't work on it until Sunday.
I plan on torquing it up twice but on the second tightening I'm going to watch the disk and caliper holder. If I get to 50 fine, if its above 35/40 and gets to close I plan on leaving it there.
Not sure I'm explaining it well.
Bottom line. I'll try and torque to spec. I'm going to keep an eye on the alignment as well. If torquing it to spec looks misaligned I'm going to leave it a little loose. I'll try and get a reading of the final foot pounds I leave it at and I'll post it here.

Ok. Spacer is in. Wheel is on. Everything lined up at 50ft pounds. Wheel spins freely.
Only rode two miles but don't foresee any problems. Thanks again for the help.
