My son's 07. Pushed the starter button and nothing. Battery checked out fine. Held the button down and after about 6 seconds the starter kicks in and starts bike. This goes on for a few days. I take apart the throttle assemble to get at the electrics for the starter button. Take it apart, and there are quiet a few small pieces to keep track of and not lose including a very small brassy looking spring. Put it all back together and now everything works as good as new. Must of been a lousy contact. And zero hesitation on the starter. Maybe this has something to do with hesitating starter syndrome.

Hey Craig, when I put the hot grips on my Uly it came with the entire new throttle assembly but I never noticed any difference in the starter hesitation my bike has always had. Even when I switched batteries it still has the hesitation. I've always thought that was caused by a weak ground cable connection to the motor. I just haven't ever tried to clean that since it still starts.

Don,
Here's what I've done on my son's 07' this past month:

Rotated engine to fix rear rocker box leak. Leak fixed as far as I can tell so far.

Installed Mosfet Regulator/Rectifier and this fixed the charging problem.

Starter begins having problem. Press starter button and nothing happens. Find if I hold it down 5 or 6 seconds the starter finally begins cranking and engine fires up but seems to need TPS reset also.

Exchanged all 4 relays with my relays from my 06 ULY to make sure it wasn't a relay. It made no difference to the the starter problem. Checked all fuses and they were fine.

Exchanged my Shorai battery for my son's Shorai and this made no difference. These Shorai batteries have been great. Both batteries are in excellent shape but just needed to rule this out as a potential problem.

TPS reset ECMSpy on hot engine. Did the TPS reset because even when the starter would crank the engine was having trouble staying going without throttle manipulation which is adnormal. TPS reset really did the trick and bike now goes right into nice idle without throttle help. Still was having starter problem.

Yesterday took apart throttle assembly and the starter button mechanism and then reassembled. Didn't really do anything but take apart and reassemble. Starter button works great now. Spins engine real fast and no hesitation seen yet.

I have no idea if the hesitation has anything to do with the starter button but when the starter was not functioning properly I would hold down the button and it might take 5 or 6 seconds and then the starter would start cranking. 5 or 6 seconds is a very long hesitation is all that I am saying. After fiddling with the starter button electrics in the throttle assembly it fires up instantaneously. May all be a red herring. If a hesitation develops I will report it here. Son's 07 has 20,000+ miles.

Try holding down button while steering lock to lock. Perhaps a worn wire in the neck?

So you think it was a spring on the starter button not making a solid contact was causing the problem?

I remember when the Uly was first introduced people were putting star washers on all electrical connections mainly the engine ground to make their bikes start better. Did you make that change to either of your Uly's? I'm just curious.

Cyclo,
Not sure but the problem went away. Some kind of contact problem for sure though.

My 08 XT had an issue with the start button last year. I pulled the handlebar switch apart and found corrosion where the wire connects to the start switch. The screw was not completely tight and this added to the corrosion issue. I cleaned up the loop on the end of the wire and also cleaned up the area where the wire attaches. Put it all back together with a little dielectric grease and no troubles since. Thanks.
