I thought this video was interesting. Of course it would have been better if they had also shown us what would happen to a top brand conventional motorcycle oil. I run this oil in my 08 XT and will continue to do so.

Amsoil marketing at it's best!
Without a comparison it's just numbers; and only their numbers.

Reminds me of Chris Christy's investigation of himself and finding himself without fault or culpability. Amsoil shouldn't insult our intelligence with this hyperbole. Do side by side tests with other syn oils and then at the least show us what numbers would have signified bad results. Even then they should get a non-biased group to do this sort of test. My biggest regret after watching that video is that I'll never get that 4:54 of my life back.

Yeah really. If I had known it was going to shorten anyone's life I would have never posted it. I will never watch any video on here again unless it is highly recommended by others. Life is too short to waste any time. Forgive me.

There is no way non-synthetic would have survived that test. And I'm not saying that just because I've used Amsoil for 40 years. Petroleum oil simply cannot ever even hope to match synthetic's cold and hot performance. Petroleum oil breaks down at a much lower temperature than synthetic - broken down oil doesn't lubricate very well.

Put petroleum oil in a pot on your outdoor gas grill, run it to 500-550F and see what happens.

google "motor oil noack volatility"

http://www.pqiamerica.com/Feb2014/consolidated5w20 ALL.html

The 250C using in the Noack test is 482F. All the oils in the chart above lose about 15% of their volume in one hour of the test. That is normal for petroleum oil. Synthetics typically lose less than half of petroleum during that test.

It's kind of a revelation to realize an engine "using oil" might not actually be using oil - it might be the oil volume shrinking because the oil's light components are evaporating off.

That is what the noack test measures, and the petroleum oils on the link lost an average of 15% of their volume in one hour at 482F. One lost 18% - in one hour.

Less evaporation loss, or less volatility, is one reason why engines seem to use less oil when running synthetic.
