Okay, so now I've got a cable and have ECMSpy Mono installed.

I can connect to my bike and see all of the info on screen... does anyone have any pointers on what I should be looking for?

My TPS shows 4 deg at idle and 85 deg at WOT. Temp sensors seem to be reading reasonable numbers.

I have no interest at all in improving power output... I just want to try to figure out what's going wrong.

Can I log data without activating ECMSpy? I tried this morning but it didn't seem to work.

BTW - for anyone looking to make a cable.

I bought my cable from CanadaRobotix.com and my Deutsch plug from the local Caterpillar dealer (~$7 + pins).

The cable I bought uses the same chip as others. The wires are pretty thin but this thing doesn't have to be rugged. It was $17.99... I ordered it on Wednesday afternoon and it was at my house (400km away) the next day.

Do a tps reset, you should have 5-100% with it smoothly increasing as you twist the throttle

Engine should be at operating temperature, too.

Temperature is not an issue on 08+

Because TPS reset is built into the ECM?

No, because the idle is controlled by the ECM. You can do a 06 cold, but it is harder to get the idle right.

When looking at the throttle percentage, can't get it to go to 100%, which indicates an issue with the TPS or something is binding the throttle.

Since you just bought the cable and plug. Do you happen to have the actual part numbers as I have a Cat dealer right down the road and want to get what you got.

The Caterpillar part number is 155-2271

Not sure if they use it on their regular equipment or just the underground stuff... it's worth a shot!

Keep in mind that the pins do not come with it.

Okay, so tonight I hooked it up again just to verify a few things.

First, my TPS reads 4.3 degrees at idle and 85 degrees at WOT. Should I be concerned? Has anyone else checked their '08+ TPS? Is my range normal?

One thing that I did notice tonight is that the air temp sensor was reading 37c before I started it up. I had returned from a ride 2 hours earlier so I thought it must have been due to engine heat.

I ran it for a few minutes and was a little surprised to see that it never dipped below 31c... it's 15c outside tonight.

I'll have to check it again tomorrow.

I currently have ECMSpy installed on my work laptop. They can (and do) swap it out or replace it at any time. I read on the ECMSpy site that the database only works on the computer it was installed on.

I'm thinking that I would be foolish to activate ECMSpy on this machine. Does anyone know if I did activate... and then had my laptop replaced... would they make me "donate" again?

Thanks!

In the morning, when it's dead cold, check the engine temp and the air temps. They should be same within a couple of degrees. If not then one of them is bad.

At idle the TPS volts are right and the idle RPM is right. The BAS volts are right as is the front O2 volts. The AFV is set from about 80 to 110. 83 is low but nothing to worry on as it will change due to conditions. You can re-set it to 100 if you wish. The O2 sensor will cut in at about 140 C. The spark advance should drop to 1.5 degrees once the engine temp passes 160 C. Or at least that is what my 10 bike does if it is running right.

The battery volts however ARE NOT RIGHT? They should be some place from about 13.5 to 14.7 volts, depending on the load and battery charge, even at idle.

What faults do you have?

I don't have any trouble codes stored.

The bike sputters, pops and stalls at low revs and off idle.

The bike generally lacks power.

"I don't have any trouble codes stored". Forget the CEL thing as it is a waste of space, for the most part, and electrons. I have had lots of problems on my bikes and never seen a CEL light.

To start with find out why your battery volts are wrong with the engine running as the bike will not run right if they are not. Run a log and post the results.

I'll have to get it out for a ride... wife's working... little ones are sleeping.

I agree that the voltage should be higher.

It may have been low due to a few minutes with ignition on (messing around with ECMSpy) before I started it up.

Is there any way to log data without activating ECMSpy?

I think with the new version you can but I do not use ECM-SPY so I do not know but you can with TunerPro and it is free.

Do I need Tunerpro RT or is regular Tunerpro good for what I am doing?

I've got the latest version of ECMSpy but it doesn't seem to want to let me look at the logged data because I haven't activated it!?!

I may be missing something.
