No...
Yes...
My `06 crank was out of tolerance, eating the oil pump drive gear. Rebuilt it with an `08 components. Aka: Money pit.
I would look for an `08-`10.
Just my $.02

I'd pay more for an 08+ myself if you are set on a Uly. That said, I'd say 3300 is still a good deal if it is well cared for. There is a decent chance you will get some headaches out of just about any model year. With any luck, that 06 may already have a good portion of that sorted.

Depends.
A lot of folks think you can use synthetic lube and get 5000 miles or more between oil changes but these people don't think about the fact that they still use the same oil filters and the filters will by-pass if the back pressure gets too high. Also, they don't think about the oil pumps that were designed to pump oil, not synthetic substitutes that have the viscosity of water.

In short- it depends. Theses engines can run a long, long time or they can be fragged by folks that fall for the latest fad.
Look at the maintenance records and talk to the owner.
They are not hard to re-build but need to be purchased with that in mind if suspect..

I have 40,000 on my 2006 July and I sure as hell wouldn't sell mine for anything near that price! I'll ride it into the ground first.

30k on my 06.
Factory battery.
07 fork springs.
10 wheel.
EBR front rotor mounting kit.
1" bar risers.
third belt.
comfort kit.
Buell heated grips.
HID low beam.
aux lights.
Shindengan MOSFET VR.
replaced 77 connector.
going to do neck bearings at the 30k service here next week (slight notch on-center). Also need to diagnose a clutch rattle during the service. But...that's my *entire* service history on the bike other than PM oil changes and tire changes.

Wouldn't sell it for the world. Makes me smile every time I ride it.

Sounds like a good deal to me. If you like it...buy. Ride. Grin. Repeat.

Hell yes.
Yes.

26k ain't trivial for these bikes. Some go for 100k+ miles, others will have to be completely rebuilt at 40k. The jury is still out as to which is which... the hard data we gathered here suggests there *is* a real crank problem, but that a large majority of the bikes won't have it.

Here is how I looked at it (buying a 10,000 mile Uly for $5000 a few years ago)...

For "crap bike" money (your $3500) you are getting one hell of a nice bike. As good, some say better, than $10k to $15k bikes you could compare it too. Buy a BMW GSA or Ducati MultiStrada or Triumph Tiger, and you will flat out loose that much cash simply by driving it off the lot. Really. Other bikes in that $3500 category are things like VStroms and KLR's, which are cool for what they are and are as durable as anvils, but can't hold a candle to a Uly as a road bike when its running well.

Say you buy the bike for $3500, and your crank goes tomorrow. Unlikely, but still perhaps a roll of the dice (your odds aren't as bad as mine were). OK, fine, spend $3000 on a total engine rebuild with the updated crank and cases. Maybe get a little more power out of it as well with some head work or playing with the stroke. Maybe stick with stock.

OK, now you are $6500 into the bike, but you have what is (in many important regards) a new bike. What else are you going to get for $6500 these days that is nicer than a Uly with a nicely reworked engine?

Ride it. If you love it, buy it. If it breaks, fix it or sell it to somebody else to fix. If I saw a 2006 Uly intact but with a dead motor for $1000, I'd be SORELY tempted to buy it and tuck it in the garage for a rainy day.

There was a problem with the '07 crank shafts. Not so many in '06.

I'd say yes.

I bought a 2006 seven years ago for around $14,000 with hard bags and a back rest pad. I have not regretted paying that price for what it has brought to me through what it is.

My '06 has right at 60,000 on it. Still not for sale.

"Is 3300 a good deal for a 2006 uly with 26k miles?". I would say that it is very cheap or at least it would be in the UK. You would need to put another $2000 on that price. I would assume you know how to buy a bike so I will not go through all of that. The build quality, for the main part, is very good as are most of the parts.

"Is 26k miles a lot on these bikes?". No or is it on any other modern bike. If you said it was put on the road from 2008 that is still only 5k a year. Which is nothing at all in my opinion.

Put it this way. If you were to round the price up to 4000 to allow for any parts needed and a "full on" home service it is still very cheap as long as it is a good bike to start with.

It is, of course, unfortunate for those who have had crank problems but from my 5 years of net reading I have only seen two.

All I will say is, and I do NOT promote anything for its name sake alone, there is nothing on the market, new or old, that can do what a Uly does for the money. And trust me I tried real hard after my 06 bike was stolen but everything was 50% more and nothing like as good anyway.
I think the only thing that comes close is the new KTM.

Uly man, my Ulysses is an 06, first registered in UK in Feb 2008. It has 19,500 miles on it.Airbox mod, FS belt tensioner. What would it be worth in England?

Buy it, or give me the number and i will. Its one hell of a bike to ride. And all the little quirks are worth the ride. 48K on my 06 and going strong.

$3300 is chump change for such a great bike. I'm heading to Sturgis in a couple of weeks on mine and it's an 06', Oct 05' build date bike. As long as the bike has not been beat then it will most probably be the best bike you've ever owned. Mine certainly has been my best ride easily. So much for the money even at twice that price. I paid 11.5 out the door price back towards the end of 2005 and it has been rock solid and a joy to ride ever since. I throw it around like a trail bike.
