How much warning do you get prior to wheel bearing failure and does the bike become instantly unsafe to ride. My 07 has had the rear bearings replaced once already with just over 11K on the clock now. (bearings were replaced by previous owner). Are the bearing failures happening primarily to guys riding off road? |

Bite the bullet and forget about rear wheel bearing worries. Actually that seems to be a very reasonably priced rear wheel, bearing and axle kit. I bought one for my 06 ULY and one for my son's 07 ULY. Now when we go on a trip we have one less thing to fret about. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17330.html (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on June 27, 2013) |

I only ride my 08 XT on good blacktop roads, never gravel, and I had a bearing failure at 7300 miles. I was riding along about 75 miles from home when I heard a sort of popping noise then a little squeal and the bike started to act like the rear tire was low. I was able to idle about 1/4 mile to an old farm place and called my brother to bring my truck and haul us home. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/653516.html?1317306927 |

To answer your questions, you get NO warning, just a weird vibration when it happens. I rode 40 miles in rush hour highway traffic with a THRUM THRUM THRUM vibration in the L/H footpeg and when I finally got home I took a good look and a couple of balls fell out in the driveway. I'd have to look but it was probably around 26,000 miles when it happened and I never ride in the dirt. |

My 08 gave no real warning. I took a long ride in the rain and got home just fine. The next day, I backed the bike up out of the garage and heard the rear hub clacking. ???WTF?? I said to myself but sure enough, both rear bearings were full of water and also the hollow hub was full of water. The shop accused me of crossing rivers! |

Water is more the culprit than dirt/dust. A single pressure wash can hose the bearings soon after. The 2010 wheel also has "proper" environmental seals. Such as you'd see on any bike made in Japan... |

26k on my 07, I got it with 10k or something. As far as I know, I am still on original bearings (but maybe the PO replaced them the day before I bought it). I have spares in the sidecase. I'm pretty careful about putting the wheel on and off. |

One of the warning signs is a greasy mess where the bearing seals are. This area should be clean. Another is a notchy feel to the bearing when the wheel is spun when jacked up off the ground. It should be dead smooth. Check for any play in the bearings when the wheel is off the ground. There should be zero. |

Just prior to total failure of both rear wheel bearings I could feel the clicking in my feet on the pegs. |
