Just throwing this out for opinions as Ive owned several Ducati's and Triumphs that seem to have inherent electrical issues. Some similar to what I read about the Uly. I'll start with the starter circuit. When I hit the starter on my 06 it starts to turn then stops momentarily like mass compression then cranks over and fires. Much like the Euro bikes many guys increase the size of the starter cables with bigger ones to handle the amp load. Next is the charging system. I'll use my 02 Tiger for example. Runs fine,starts great bla,bla. Stick a DVM across the battery with it running and you'll see about 13.1 volts give or take. One of the common mods is to disconnect the leads from the regulator that tie into the wiring harness and run them directly to the battery. I did this along with many others and at idle you now have 14+ volts. There is some consideration in this change like adding in a 30amp fuse in line with one of the giant fuse holders I cant recall the name of and taping up the old leads. Cant say if this would work for a Buell but on the Triumph it bypasses a mess of small gauge wires and multiple connectors that are a source of resistance that causes the regulator to harness plug to fry much like Buells #7?? plug behind the front sprocket guard.

Do Triumphs still use Lucas electrics? If so, that explains everything right there.

The Uly electrics are no better or worse than any other modern EFI bike. Or are the mechanics for that matter. You only need to do some reading to see what they can be like. Even the much vaunted GS does and some bad ones at that.

$ for $ there are NO bikes of the same year/condition/type/class that can match a Uly. I know I tried to find one.

I would NEVER unhook the voltage reg.

Your stator puts out the least voltage when you're at idle - lower rotor speeds = lower voltages. Rev the engine of that Triumph to about 3,000 and see what sort of voltage you're pushing into that battery now. And with the voltage being pushed into the battery...it's also being pushed into every electrical component on board. Lights. Computers. Switches. You name it, it's probably being overloaded. Unless the Triumph system is vastly different than the Buell system - I can promise you, the Buell will climb the V scale along with the RPM. The regulator is what keeps it in check.

I don't think he's disconnecting the VR. What it sounds like is that the Triumph VR feeds output voltage through a bunch of circuits before getting to the battery. Buells already go straight to the battery first and then to the rest of the bike so there should be no voltage loss there.

Bingo Griffmeister, No unhooking the VR,just bypassing a load of undersized wires and connections. Ulyman,I agree however like all of them they can be improved upon. That's why were all here isnt it ; )Far as GS'es go, after a 95 and 01 never again and I'll never understand the love for them. Don't know if you have the chance to ride a Ducati Elefant, but their right up there with the Uly for fun factor.

"Ulyman,I agree however like all of them they can be improved upon." Yes they can and some very easy and cheap mods make this a MUCH, MUCH better bike. The only real big one, if you want it, is the 10 rear wheel. Everything else, of worth, costs peanuts and just a little time and effort.

Lucas oil any relationship to Lucas electrics He,he ; )Triumphs use Sagam FI, not sure about the rest of the stuff though. Least its not the funky British threads and sizes anymore on the hardware.

Boy you're not kidding. Had an argument with an old boss on the size of a thread. He swore it was a 13mm thread but they don't make a 13mm thread. I got out my Machinist Bible and found it. British Whitworth 1/2"-16!
