Hey all, my CEL is on and I thought I'd use ECM spy to read the code. I'm having some difficulty with the program that someone might recognize. The Uly is an 08, the ECMSPY version is 1.12.26. ECMSPY is able to locate the port (COM5) but when I try to read the codes I get "Getting Firmware Version" and then "Failed to get Firmware version, exiting now." I get the same error message when the cable's not hooked up so I assume it's a connetion problem.

First question, is this year of bike supported by ECMSPY? I assumed it was because the ECM map files include an 08 version. What else am I missing?

EDIT: I'm able to read the other data, temp, RPM, volts, etc, with the bike running, it's only the fetching of firmware that's not working.

I wish there was on in depth on line tutorial for this for the electronically challenged. I have a 06 and attempted a TPS reset with my ECM Spy. I cannot get real time reads like tach, but get voltage and temp. Sometimes it shows the TPS percent of voltage but it never changes when throttle is applied. It says its hooked to com port 04 or 06,cant recall, then shows timed out. Its really frustrating tryin to figure this out and hope to not jack up the fueling at the same time.

@Ratman:
You need to be in the "online mode"

So go top left on the software and click online mode and it will work!

Hey Lars1974, on the gauge screen (diag mode?) and in the upper left should be an icon for "online mode" ? Dang.. wish I was at home with the bike and Ecmspy to look.
Thank You for the info.

Rat,

There's an icon in the upper left with what looks like a pair of keys. Click on that to toggle off/online.

Short shift, Gents?

Know your subject, all can be found in ECM-SPY Help and/or Tunerpro/Google. If you are not 100% sure with this sort of thing you may have better luck playing "Russian Roulette" with a 1911 ACP.

Ski, use TunerPro, the free ECMspy does not work on 08+

Frog, thanks for that response. I've just spent the past few hours wading through the TunerPro material, including finding out what XDF and ADX files I need. I must say, as a 30 year veteran of the software industry, this application is one of the most difficult to engage that I've encountered. For those of you who understand this stuff, I have really only two questions:

1) Since the ECMSPY website lists information for 08+, are you sure that ECMSPY won't support my bike, or can I upload new files for that support?

2) Assuming I'm forced to using TunerPro, does it use the same cable as ECMSPY?

Uly_man: All I'm trying to do here is read the damned error codes, I don't really need a lecture on the danger of changing maps. Yes, google and other tools are available, but then what's the point of a forum if not for asking for a hand now and then?

Ski, Place your thumb switch in the "run" position with the key off. Take one end of a paperclip and stick it in the diagnostic port so it jumps pins 1 and 2 to each other(the connector has numbers on each pin, but me old eyes need a magnifying glass to read them) While doing this, turn the key on and watch the check engine light. It will start flashing your codes. An example would be two flashes and then a pause followed by three flashes would equal code 23. The bike will continue to do this until all codes have been shown and then it will start over (if I remember correctly). Just turn the key off once you are down. It helps to have a piece of paper and something to write with so you can write down the codes.

Also for you owners that use an Android phone this free App is worth downloading

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org. ecmdroid&hl=en

Then you just need to make yourself a bluetooth dongle to plug into your bikes com port to take with you on your journeys.

Ski, you need to either buy the ECMspy for 08+ bikes, or use TunerPro. I have not got around to playing with with ECMDroid yet, so I can't comment on that. I just use my Windows tablets with Tunerpro.

The ECM interface cable is the same for all PC programs.

Right, Frog, I figured that out. The FREE version only supports up to 07. I'm going to continue to putz around with TunerPro but since you have this figured out, one quick question....Do you need a bin file to connect? I have the adx and xdf files, but have not yet located a bin file.

You get the Bin file from the bike by fetching the EEPROM with ECMRead (it saves it as XPR if I remember right, but it does not matter). My understanding is TunerPro has that all built in now, but I haven't tried it. You open that file and the correct XDF from Ecmspy.com and you now have full control over the program. I never fooled around with the ADX files either, so I don't know what they do.

From there the error codes are under "Stored Errors", if any are set then they are the stored code.

Ok here's what I've sussed out. Unlike ECMSpy, Tunerpro requires one to set the COM port. Once I had that done, I was able to read data. In the error codes, I see the following:
1 CDiag 4
Open Only : AMC

This I interpret as Active Muffler Control. As it turns out, I have a spare actuator (don't ask) so I'm confident that the problem isn't major and it's fixable. Thanks all, for your assistance.

Don't throw the old one away just yet... mine threw the code also, and was in deed not actuating. I pulled the actuator apart and cleaned some plastic swarf out and moved the grease around, and it started working again.

It may fail again, but it bought me some time...

If all you want is the error codes just pay a donation fee to ECM-SPY for your bike version. It is for a kids charity here in the UK. ECM-SPY was designed by Pash and Gunter for Buells as an easy to use tool for these bikes.

TunerPro is a generic tool and can be used for many things inc cars etc. It is VERY powerful and you can do almost anything with it if you want. ECM-SPY is fine but if you need to do logged runs you will need MegaSquirt stuff as well and that costs more. The prog is fine but like any other you need to learn what its about and also what that prog controls. It is, more or less, a PLC system.

Yes, we have no CEL light, we have no CEL light today.

Once I figured out it was the AMC, I pulled off the aircover to verify, took it apart, cleaned it, got the spring return working, put it back together, performed the test again, it rotated back and forth and no CEL light. I would like to thank Froggy for his answering my question and steering me in the direction of Tunerpro, the Tunerpro guy for creating such a useful tool, Reep for his advice on resuscitating the module, Ratbuell and Mnrider for in another thread describing the test procedure, and Al Gore for inventing the internet so I could do all this without going to the dealer, shelling out a couple of hundred bucks and wondering if they put it all together right.

Once again, Badweb to the rescue.

Good job Ski! The only problem is if you could just take out screws to fix it means you have the old style with plastic gears. I've been through two of those. If you can save up some cash you might want to invest in a new style with rivets and steel gears. But who knows, you might get lucky!!

Yeah, Tootal, the good news is I HAVE two. Both old style with plastic gears, the one on the bike and the one from my parted out 07. Both have grease in them and neither show any gear tooth damage. I think I'm set for awhile, and it's not like this bit breaking is going to strand you like, oh, say a belt.

If you pull the air box cover off and go for a ride it's amazing if you actually see the thing work! You have to be WOT and high rpm before it even thinks about opening! So, you are absolutely correct, not that big of a deal!

As a post mortem to this thread I should mention the following: Once I had the code which pointed me to the ACM, and the procedure to test it (remove air box, kill switch on, throttle wide open, turn on key) what I saw was nothing. The module didn't rotate. The first thing I checked was the fuse, but since on the 08 the fuse for the ACM is the same for the horn and brake, that was easy to check. Honk. I had a used ACM from when I parted my 07 out so I swapped it out. Same test, this time it rotated....but slowly and grudgingly. Well that's strange. So I took the original into the house and disassembled it. There's not much in there, a small motor, three plastic gears, and a spring. Hmm, everything looked ok. I had a hunch. I forced the replacement to turn by hand a couple of times, and it started moving when I tested it. Then I went back to the original, and that one rotated too.

My conclusion at this point is that the cable was sticking down by the muffler. I had ridden through some grungy mud a few days before all this started. I think that gummed up the cable and hardened and that's what caused the whole thing. Who'd a thought that mud on a muffler could cause a CEL? I'm going to get under the bike this afternoon and clean that all off really well. It appears I'll have to remove the chin faring to do so.
