Power doesn't usually seem to hit as it should - a lot of noise but ....
Bud says when I go wfo lots of black gas smoke ...
new NGK two weeks ago
Oil & filter - primary too

Had original paper AF before & acted same

Your fuel mileage is toward the low end of average. Black smoke is odd. It was doing this before the plug change?

I had the plug clip corrode in the rear plug wire. It would not cleanly snap onto the spark plug and created odd running.

Check the ECM connectors. Do they show damage from contact with the bottom of the seat? Does the seat show wear marks from pressing on the connections? Cracks have been known to develop at the connector/ecm juncture.

Maybe?

Have not relocated ecm but don't see any damage - changed to tall seat shortly after purchase in April - thinking of buying race ecm. Because of groups feedback...

So you are rich at wot. Is your muffler valve stuck closed? Did somebody stuff a banana up your tail pipe?

Have you been riding it slow, lugging it perhaps.....ala HD cruiser? Have you run it for a few miles at or above 4000 rpms? Try it, it might like it.

It has a recent exhaust servo valve install - cable adjusted almost taught. Check engine light no longer on...

Are you sure that the foam filter can breathe deeply enough?

I hope the oil PJ1 & UNI are compatible...

Comment about exhaust - how can I tell if servo is opening properly?

The actuator is mounted on top of the inner air box cover.

Inspect the cable making sure it is hooked up on both ends. Take the air box cover off and you can watch the actuator move with throttle movement with the engine running.

U know. I don't think it moves when throttled - from memory after I did install .... what would cause that? New riveted body from local dealer ...

Grey smoke is burning oil and black smoke is rich fuel. Look at the can outlet and wipe it clean. If it gets black again, give the bike a good blast to blow out all the soot, thats the problem. You should see no smoke AT ALL from the can. 40mpg on a US Gallon is rubbish and way to low.

If you air and/or engine temp sensor is out the ECM may still be in fuel enrichment mode. Hard to say but if you take it to a shop they can test the emissions real easy and cost very little.

If you do find it is a fuel problem change the oil after you fix it as some may have thinned the oil. Not good.

The engine should run, without smoke, with the valve open or closed. It may be a bad fuel injector soleniod. Who knows.

Pull the outer air box cover, make sure the connections are good, start the engine, rev it up pretty hard. The actuator should move the cable in and out a couple of times through the rev range.

If not check the valve's arm on the muffler to see if it can be moved. It can stick with corrosion or carbon build up. The cable can break, it will have a fuse somewhere, or the actuator can fail with gears breaking inside.

Yep and do not try and move the actuator by hand as you may damage it.

you can check the actuator without running the engine.
take off the airbox cover so you can see the actuator.
put the kill switch in 'run' and hold the throttle open, then turn the key on (don't start the bike). the actuator should cycle and stay 'actuated'.

Actually, 40mpg for a 2008 Uly is not uncommon. Seems to me that the mpg survey was in the low 40s for the 2008 model. I average right around 40 or so with mine. No smoke, runs great.

Mine is an '08. 43 MPG w/o bags. 41 mpg w/bags. Mixed street & freeway riding.
Highest I ever got was 47 mpg on all interstate.
I have the breather mod w/catch can, K&N filter & low screen on madstadt brackets.

The gas smoke seems to be the red flag ...has there been a temp sensor that's caused such behavior ?

The intake air temperature sensor (IAT) could lead to an over-rich mixture. The IAT is that weird thing in the airbox, just aft of the intake bell. It can be very carefully cleaned with a non-deposit-leaving solvent that is also not harsh enough to cause damage. I'd try alcohol. The IAT connector is under the airbox floor.

"Fooling" the IAT is how a lot of aftermarket boxes cause the ECU to deliver a richer than factory fuel mixture.

They also make a spray cleaner just for MAP sensors, which is similiar to an IAT, I believe. I saw it in a Pep Boys the other day.

"Uni air filter oiled with pj1 oil" Yes check the IAT. I do not know what PJ1 oil is but things like K&N use a special oil. Use to much and it may have got on the IAT.

ECM-SPY will give you all the numbers from the sensors if you need them and cheap enough.

I don't think you have to worry about oil on the temp sensor.
My X1 has had the same sensor since new and I can GUARANTEE that it has been coated with oil from the breather and K&N filter oil for 80,000+ miles.

I would be more concerned with solvents.

Check that it's plugged in though!

"43 to 48 mpg for me with bags (I'm a big fella, both in height and girth)."

I have just tested (it is not run in yet) my 2010 bike for mpg. 95 Octain BP fuel. 90% highway miles at 80 to 100 mph most of the time and not hanging about getting to those speeds either. 48mpg on a UK gallon which is 40mpg on a US gallon. The numbers are accurate and close tested as well. I also know for a fact that you will get better mpg and engine running with better fuel. It just costs more.

The "black smoke" does not sound right at 40mpg US gallon. It would be much less if it was that rich. Do you have a aftermarket can? Big "puffs" of black smoke can be the can blowing out its "sooty" packing.

Also look at head temp sensor--if it goes it will tell engine it is cold adding fuel for cold start.Have you looked at your AFV?

The CEL only seems to show a open/closed sensor fault. It will not pick up Earth resistance problems either. I have had this, O2 sensor and side stand sensor faults, among others, on both my bikes with "no show" from the CEL?

The dam thing is not even worth the weight of the lamp on the bike if you ask me. Only the oil pressure that is and I do not trust that much either.
