So, trying the replace it to see if it fixes it route, I've purchased a used ECM from an inmate here.

I've searched the forum and came up with plenty on using ecmspy in with a new muffler but didnt come up with anything on a basic ecm change using the stock muffler.

Do I need ecm spy to do the swap or just to reset the TPS? I'm asking because I tried simply swapping but nothing seems to be firing. I tried using ecmspy (the demo version) and got an error that it wasnt able to decrypt a file.

Any pointers or would be appreciated...

Thanks,

CM

The ECM-SPY "demo" version is just that. You need the right version for your ECM which I think the demo version will allow you to find. You then pay a charity donation fee that lets you download the version you need. Read the details on there site.

Your ECM should work fine in the first place unless it is damaged. Running problems could be MANY other things. Just changing things out could cost you a small fortune. Start with the grounding problems first and then cables. Then sensors. All of which is cheap enough. Use logic to work through the problems.

CM,

On an '08, like your profile states (and through '10 FWIW), you don't need ECMSpy to do a TPS reset. The prescribed TPS reset for DDFI 3 bikes is all you need.

Not sure how I managed to typo that, but I've actually got an 07.

The big question is, should an ECM swap be plug and play? When I plug in the replacement ECM and turn the key, I dont hear the fuel pump run nor do I see the CEL come on.

You need to do a TPS reset for what you are doing, the old free EcmSpy will get the job done.

You have another issue, your replacement ECM is not powering up, as indicated by the lack of CEL and fuel pump.

Yes, an ECM swap should be plug and play. A TPS reset is required to get it to run right, but it should run as soon as you plug it in.

Sounds like you got a bad ECM. Put your old one back in and see if that cures the mystery issue.

I bought and installed a used ECM on my '06...which is the same as your 07, I think. The installation is easy, of course, but you must do a TPS reset for it to run correctly. In my case, I could not get it to run at all until I completed the TPS reset.

Good luck,
bb

I just resolved a similar issue, thinking I had a bad ECM, but ended discovering a single broken wire in the bundle behind the headlight that supplied power to the ECM. So now I have a spare ECM. Really go over the wiring/grounding possibilities.

When I installed my EBR ECM like billy bee it would not run at all before reset. And don't forget to reset again when engine is at operating temperature.

I would like to use ECMSpy but am hesitant to spend $71 for it because of the statement that it will only work on the single computer that it's licensed to. I mean, what if that computer quits working or I get a new one?

I would think that there would be a way to re-license it but I'm unable to locate a way to contact the author about it. Does anyone here know about that?

TIA

Just use Tunerpro, it is free and has no license restrictions.

Will do.
Does it do everything that ECMSpy does?

OK. I'll get it set up ASAP. From all my reading so far, I got the idea that ECMSpy was the app to use for this. I'm glad to hear that TunerPro is just as good if not better.

I don't mind paying for a needed app but it really rubs me wrong to have it limited to only one machine that might not be that long lived.

Thanks
