Hi all, Just wanted to give you some feedback on my participation in the GS challenge yesterday. There were alot of really good riders at this event including Tom Wolf (who I had supper with), Simon Pavey (6x paris/dakar), and Joe Stather (nicknamed "joe Dakar"). We were only 2 riders that were not on BMW Me on my 2008 Uly, and another guy with a KLR 650. Although the final talleys are not out yet I finished in the middle of the pack even given my 3 really nasty falls down a rockface. This portion of the race we needed to dropinto a ditch straigt in then pop out the other side going straight up a rockhill then in the middle of the accent turn right 90 degrees to then do a cambered crossing of the rockslope then straight down in to a ditch and back out again. I managed to get up the rockface but then during the cambered crossing i couldn't get the bike to stay up. I fell over downhill 3 times with the bike falling over me each time. The 3rd time was the worst my leg got stuck between the engine and the front wheel with the bike ontop of me with my head facing downslope in the rocks. Amazingly after those 3 falls not only is the bike ok (not even a mirror broken) but I am also ok.... other than some bruises and the fact that I hurt all over. lol. But its a good pain. Pain of accomplishment. I have a video of me making myway through a bog/forest section but it's 175Mb big. Not sure I can post that. Here are some pics. Note that seeing as I was taking the pictures these are not of me but of my Partner. Some of the easier trails.
A forest area.

Way to throw yourself under the bike to save it!! You'll heal up but parts cost money!! Great job! Was the bike trying to slide down the rocks or were you having a hard time keeping it perpendicular to gravity? |

Good stuff man. Congratulations Throw the video up on YouTube or something and link it here. Also, likewise with the images. Upload them to something like http://imgur.com/ and link them here, so we can see them in their full glory. As someone who has always wanted to try some of the more ruff stuff on my Uly, I am very interested in this. |

A Uly, in off road competition, with luggage (tail trunk) attached. I have a new appreciation of what the bike is capable of. Good job Matt! |

Yeah... all that offroad riding really did a job on my sandwich in my topcase. I had coldcuts and tomatoes all over the inside of my topcase, including my rain gear, and my camera bag. Also, my race guide was soaked with tomatoe and kinda smelled like a pizza. tasty tasty race guide.... |

Nice job! What tires were you running? That looks like a lot of fun. |

Nice job! That last tight turn would have been a bear on my '06. I've gotten good at 3 point turns on it though... |

Nice job! What tires were you running? That looks like a lot of fun. Looks to me like a 150 TKC80 rear and a 120 MT60R front. Very impressive! |

I was waiting out to see if i could get a set of the new TKC80s in Uly sizeds but no luck they are coming in mid-july. SO I put on a Pirelli MT60 front, and a TKC80 on the back. The TKC80 is the GS size 150/70 17. This is the same setup I used to do the Trans-Lab. I use this setup a lot. I find the TKC80s last about the same as a rear MT60. I ride to have fun not to save money. So my rear wears out 2x faster than most other tire options... to me that is the price to pay to be able to ride anywhere I aim my bike at. THe front MT60 on the other hand lasts long. At least as long as any standard tire like a battleaxe. Great in the rain! Its hard to see on camera, but i locked up the front brakes and gave her some gas to swing the rear end out a little to get a better angle for the turn. MMcC |

I think it will remove the plastic chin as it gets kind of beat during these offroad adventures. It already cracked and loose. I'll look into the touratech Uly skid plate as an alternative. |

Interesting to see what a guy with some skills can do on a Uly. I naively took mine down the Lippincott mine trail in Death Valley. I got some real strange looks back at camp. Good showing, Matt. |

Probably the best-sounding bike on the course, too! |

Yup, One rider told me my bike sounded AWESOME, he said it had a great growl. I banged the front of my drummer though. Still fine no dent but deeply scratched. Going to see if I can get a custom built Stainless steal skid plate made to bolt up on the front muffler horizontal frame mount. MMcC |
