Hi, I have an '06 Uly, and the valve on the muffler is getting really sticky. When you manually turn it you get lovely grinding noises, and I've tried spraying various un-sticking type fluids down the shaft from the top to no avail. Any tips or ideas out there? |

Manually turn what? Are you just pulling the cable or somehow reaching in across the top of the muffler? I get some squeakiness occasionally, some Marvel Mystery Oil seems to take care of things between oil changes. |

I'm reaching on top of the muffler. I just had it off to repair an oil leak, and found how bad it had gotten. It may be past Marvel's help. Maybe I need a new muffler, hope not. |

I seem to recall being told to never turn the piece on top by hand. it could strip the plastic gears. |

That's the actuator you want to be careful of. The muffler's just a valve. Guybones, if you feel daring and have a welder you could cut the top off and see what gives. |

The valve in the muffler on my '06 started jamming at about 48,000miles or so. In my case it drops down slightly when fully closed and has to be lifted a hair to get over whatever is catching and then opens quite freely. I tried placing a shim under the external piece the cable connects to (very tricky to do in-situ) but eventually gave up and disconnected the the cable from the actuator and have wired the valve slightly open. The bike runs very well and has been 'temporarily' left that way for another 15,000miles. Mine will definitely need to have a hole cut to investigate but is currently on the 'I'll get around to it' list. |

My 2008 rattled since new. I brought it in to the shop and asked them to figure out a mystery noise that sounded like a bottom-end clunk. They misunderstood and replaced the muffler. Well at least it didn't rattle any more. That bottom end clunk sound never went away but it would have blown up by now if it was what I was afraid it was. |

Thanks for the replies - I still have some time on the extended warranty, I'll see if they'l' replace it, otherwise it's cutting time. |
