I've been think'n about buy'n a good used Uly for a while, as with any bike thers bugs that need to be worked out even if its in factory mint condition.

What upgrades & improvements should I be look'n for in my prospective bike ??

I just got my 07 last summer and 7,000 miles later I still can't get the smile off. The one thing I would change is I would get the newest or latest model I could lay my hands on. If you get one get the service book and a good torque wrench and list this site on your favorites.

They are all pretty solid.

There have been some crank failures on the bikes with the older oiling system (the pump that isn't built into the cam cover). And a cluster of them in 2007. But most aren't failing, and some have already nosed over 100k miles without a rebuild.

I bought a 2007 with side bags and 10k miles for $5000. Smoking good deal, but it was off season and I had to do a fly and ride to get it home.

Now that I know what I know about he 2007 cranks... if I could do it again, I would do... exactly the same thing. Except that I would have shipped a new rear tire to mount before I left SC. (long but fun story : ) ).

My crank might go, it might not, if it does I'll rebuild the motor. I'll probably buy another bike someday, but I don't see myself ever selling my 2007 Uly.

The newer better oiling system is for sure a net gain and worth some extra $$. But don't rule out the older Uly's either.

Uneasy_rider. Thats a great name. Very funny but you will not be "uneasy" on a Uly.

Its just my opinion but I think the mechanics, build and finish are as good as most anything out there. The main bug is the electrical system. I had a 06 bike (the first version), now have the very last 2010 version and still have had problems.

A Buell is NOT the sort of bike you can "dump on a dealer" and hope that they can fix it for you. You will need to have some idea of fixing things yourself and put some effort into the deal. The folk here are the best you will find any place for a Uly.

As far as buying one goes just use the normal rules but buy one from someone who knows the bike.

New and improved ain't necessarily so. Always remember that the crank failures are because of a bad batch of cranks and not because the original design is wet paper bag weak. Paul56 t hasn't logged 100k+ miles on a weak crankshaft and that isn't the much ballyhooed 08'/09' bikes but 06/07 cranked model.

Ok so try this one. I once knew a guy who had a car with an air cooled engine which he would always rev, from cold very hard to make it hot. I suggested that this was not a good idea and why. The engine blew up and he had to scrap the car.

Or this one. I am in my local cafe and it has no lighting and, long story short I have a quick look at the problem and advise the owner to have someone, because I did not have my tools with me, look over the problem. We have some legal issues with this in the UK now. Here is the best bit though? Not only did he not thank me for my help he could not even be bothered to buy me a 50 cent cup of Java.

there's a few things to check. just do the general new-vehicle-purchase inspection and test. you really can't get a "bad year" or model Uly

the newest will have the most farkles and do-dads on it allready, and probably the lowest miles.
i'd prefer to buy one that is un-molested and BONE-stock, but that's just me.

I would love to get a 2010 but don't think its very likely, have found some older Uly's very reasonable tho.

Most of the stuff I've dug up are electrical bugs, bearings, engine heat & some issues with vibrating things loose, totally missed the crank issues tho.

Also kind of curious about parts availability in years to come, whats the word on them ???

Seals and gaskets can easily be had in the aftermarket, along with a lot of internals and hard parts. Wiring...buy a set of cutters and learn to solder. The aftermarket is there for us, and once the factory runs out of NOS parts it will likely pick up even more slack. The only things out there that will become scarce are crash parts - bodywork, frames, swingarms, maybe forks.

But I still ride the snot outta mine. And plan to for years (and miles) to come! (And I like the user-adjustable idle on my '06, thank you very much!) : )

I didnt know if aftermarket would pick up wher factory left off or not, as long as thers enuff money to be made I guess they mite.

Will HD motors,parts(internal/external),tranny's trade out with a Buell ?? if so motor parts would'nt be that big of a issue.
