http://finance.yahoo.com/news/western-union-launch -innovative-payments-120000891.html

I used Paypal once and didn't at all like giving them access to my bank account so I opened another account to just cover the cost of the item. Was really not happy with the Paypal cut. Not sure if this WU thing is even comparable or what the cost for a transaction will be.

I copied the following from the above link.

"WU Pay places a premium on safety. Customers who use WU Pay are not required to share any account, credit card or other financial information to do a transaction online. The way it works is simple: Shoppers choose the option at checkout page, and the order is confirmed with a bill sent to their e-mail address. Consumers pay the bill the same way they pay utilities, loans, insurance, and other bills, either through their online bank account or at one of over 44,000 Western Union® Agent locations in the U.S."

I personally would not use Western Union for any kind of buying.

I've been contemplating this one but haven't had time to sit down and investigate it fully so caveat emptor:

Craig, I also don't like giving my bank information to PayPal but I found another way around that when I purchase something on Ebay. I can't remember what I click to pass the bank infor but it works ok.

Paypal would love to directly link to your bank account, but believe it's not required. My account is linked to a normal credit card. I think that 'pop-up' is just to entice you to link to your account , as though it's required. I've used them for many years and they've always resolved any issues quickly. I use PayPal anywhere on the web that'll take it as payment, solely because of the problem resolution it offers.

I recently opened an additional, free, echecking account with a debit card just to use for online purchases. I am keeping this account with a balance of close to zero dollars. Before I make an online purchase I use an online instant transfer to the account in the amount of the purchase.

Its an extra step, but I started doing this because last month someone used my debit card number online and cleaned out my bank account (of course the bank reimbursed me).

"I personally would not use Western Union for any kind of buying." No I would not either but if you must only use small amounts.

Do what Djohnk has done. If you only keep a small amount in it its all they can take. Also NEVER EVER store your banking details, passwords etc on a computer or any other WiFi/net device. Its bad news and the crooks just love it.

All money transactions cost at some point. Nothing is free no matter what the blurb says. Be safe.

Have any of you had any trouble when using PayPal? I have used it several times using my credit card number and so far, no identity theft. How about you guys? Any bad experiences? Thanks.

I've never had an issue with Paypal, I've been using it for at least 10 years, in fact because I spend over $5k a year with it I have a premier level account. I never once had an issue, but there are many of those that have.

The whole making a second bank account thing is just a waste, you aren't any more secure, if anything you are doubling your chances of identity theft in the future.

I have used PayPal, as a E-Bay buyer for 400 odd times and a few private deals as well. No problems yet.

If you payout money over the net you need to be sure its secure. PayPal is part of E-Bay and one of the reasons E-Bay has worked out so well. The real clever bit is PayPal has gone on to make the company more money through its secure money/purchase transaction services. And I have been using it 9 years.

No problems with PayPal here either. I have the account linked to a secure cc number with discover.

"The whole making a second bank account thing is just a waste"

I used to think that until I had the inconvenience of my bank account being cleaned out. I trust Paypal, and have been purchasing online way before Ebay went public.

When the crooks were finished I had -$267 in my checking and $0.00 in my savings (I have my savings hooked up to my checking as overdraft protection). I was glad I had some cash to last me awhile till the bank straightened it out and gave me the money back.

No troubles using Paypal through my credit card ever. I'd never give up the bank account info. Watch your back as best you can, scary thing is the crooks get smarter every day.
