I'm planing on doing the change to the xb9 primary many have done, what are the parts i need?

apart of gaskets, what is needed is a xb9 sprocket and xb9 chain, correct me if i'm wrong

I just changed mine today.
XB9 front sprocket.
XB9 Chain.
Primary gasket and shift shaft seal.
Inspection gasket and clutch cover gasket.
Red loctite.
Your favorite primary fluid.

I did a 15 mile test ride and I like the change. Now I have to get used to what gear at what speeds I need to run. I always felt like I was lugging it before, now I am around the 3500 rpm range.

As a new guy, this is good info. Something I may do in the future, after I play with it as is for a while. The archive link is great for procedures, plus I didn't realize there is a significant change in flyweel weight. Thanks

The 06-07 and 08-10 bikes each take a different primary sprocket. For the 08-10 bikes, leave off the red locktite and get a new crankshaft bolt.

I'm going to go the other way on my '09 XR1200. It has the 34t engine sprocket (same as stock XB9), and I'm going to the 38t (same as stock Uly). I personally don't care for the higher engine revs on the road, but the lower gearing does help getting to speed. Just a matter of preference I suppose. What would a 34t sprocket/rotor and primary chain, with about 1000 miles on it, be worth on the open market?

I know solobuell, and have bought from them, before, but i'm not ready to pay that amount of money, i could get it form the US far cheaper, and don't have problems to get it to Spain.

Pre '08 lists the sprocket available separately from the rotor, and '08 and later is listed as an assembly (sprocket and rotor assembled with bolts).

my question is that up to 2007 the sprocket is that shape, and 08 and later is the bottom picture one, so witch one is the one that works on a 2006/7 bike?

Pontlee77, it seems like you may have answered your own question with your last post, so sorry if I am misunderstanding you.

They are actually both the wrong part. The sprocket in the top photo is for a 2006-2007 XB12. (It has 38 teeth). The sprocket on the bottom is for a 2008+ XB9.

To make the conversion <on a 2006 or 2007 bike> you want a sprocket that looks like the picture on top but has 34 teeth. You need to press the rotor off of the old sprocket and reuse it on your new one.

With the 2008 crank shaft they redesigned the splines and well as the threads so it looks like it should work using a 2008 rotor on older bikes.

The top picture is the stock 06/07. The bottom picture is the new XB9 sprocket for the 06/07.

They are both for 06/07. I had to press the magnets off the top one and put it on the bottom one.

So long as it fits the sprocket and has the same number of phases, I think you could. But I have never compared the two parts, so I can't say for sure.

Why would you want to do that out of curiosity? I think you can only buy the '08 rotor as an assembly with the '08 sprocket already pressed on
. Did you break the original rotor pressing it off and just happened to have an '08 rotor lying around or something?

i bought a 08 rotor with the sprocket and chain with the idea of using it in the future to reduce the weight of the sprocket.

Now i got a 2005 xb9 sprocket, rotor and chain, so my idea is to put together the 2005 sprocket XB9 to the rotor XB12 2008 i have so when i take it to the mechanic is a direct swap and don't need to leave the bike there for a day or 2.

So is this the way to go?

Pontlee77, I don't know if the magnet of the 08 will work on an 06 but why not use the original magnet from your old sprocket. I realize you want to save time but it only takes a half hour to swap them. Be sure and support the magnets in more than two places, that tends to want to fold it in half.

Comparing a 08 XB12 rotor and a 05 XB9 rotor both share same outer size magnets same size, so in my case i see no need to remover sprocket from rotor, so it will be a much easier change, besides the 08 has a wider hole so it is only valid if you remove the sprocket and exchange it for a up to 07 bike.

I purchased a used 2008 rotor sprocket and chain, thinking the sprocket would work on my 06 Uly (08 is much lighter), i was wrong due to the sprocket has a wider inner diameter, so i kept the pieces, last week i got a used 05 xb9 rotor and sprocket, i put them beside each other and checked the measures, rotor and magnets share the same size, but the center hole where the shaft? goes is different, so saving job to my mechanic he only has to change my 06 for the 05 and the chain, no need to remove the sprocket from the rotor as they share the same one.

less top speed, shorter gears, more acceleration, more in town friendly, it's been a well talking subject.
XB9 primary on a XB12, a lot have done it and say it's the best change they have done.

I have had the 9 setup on my Uly for three seasons. I love the change for normal street riding but don't care for it on long trips.
