Been reading all the threads about throttle-blipping, and how doing so is "silly" for whatever reason. Just bought an '06 Uly. Have had many bikes through the years. I tend to blip throttle when downshifting. Is this a no-no on a Buell? It is my 1st FI bike. I'm assuming blipping "confuses" the ECM. I'm a bit amazed at those who flame the folks asking about "blipping the throttle" as I never do it to impress someone at the stop light. I do it when I matriculate through the gears on downshift -at speed on winding roads. |

Welcome to the addiction. Blip away and tell anyone who doesn't like it to f***-off. It's a simple matter of mechanical understanding and thinking. |

Blipping for shifting is fine, it is the blipping at idle that the bike doesn't like. |

Yes that's right Frogman. No throttle blipping to let others know you have a huge unit and can kick everyones a**. Strictly for mechanical reasons. |

I've been blipping on downshift for 15k miles with no issues. As already stated, it's blipping with no load that gums up the plugs. |

Blipping the throttle whilst the bike is stopped at a light; not cool... The bike might punish you if you blip right after the engine is cold started. Any other time it's ok, especially for down shifting. |

I definitely blip the throttle on downshifts. It's actually a lot easier on the vtwins because the engine revs so slowly. On my cbr, you have to be very precise and quick on the blips. On the buell, not so much. |

Do I blip – hell yeah I blip. And I am NOT ashamed to say so. But I always do it in privacy, with no one around to see or hear me. Like my mother said “stop that damn blipping or you’ll go blind”, so I'm doing it just until I needed glasses. John |

FWIW, it's called "rev-matching" when you use it on a downshift. Puts the revs where they need to be in the next (lower) gear, so you don't get thrown forward with engine braking. In a car, it's called a "heel-toe" downshift, where you can place your right foot on both the brake and throttle to achieve the same result. Roll your foot towards the throttle, blip it, bring up the revs, and let the clutch out in the lower gear. Car or bike, it makes for much better braking, and much smoother transitions through the twisties |

The bad blipping is when it's cold. It's running very rich already due to the imaginary choke being closed. Add to that the squirt of gas from the imaginary accelerator pump and some here have had the plugs fouled right up. |

Seems to me the engine on the Uly doesn't even really lend itself to blipping. Not quite fast-revving enough. I was leaving a restaurant one night and some young guys called out for me to "tach it" (I guess). They weren't really impressed with the results, so I left with a roar and the front wheel about 6 inches off the ground. |

Its what Ratbull said. It does help when your downshifting, from high speed to very low gears to balance the bike. In fact everything on a bike is to do with balance. On the road you do not need ABS, linked brakes, steering dampers, inter active suspension control or any other expensive gizzmos. You just need the basics of a good bike and know how to ride one. Simple as? Some say you should always use the clutch to upshift on a Buell but I do not, past second, and it makes for a much smoother gear change. The trick, as always is to do it right. Bikes need a little "mechanical sympathy". If you treat a bike hard it will wear faster and things like bad wheelies will hammer both head and steering bearings bad. I have never had a problem with bikes or cars but then again I do not do what some do and not expect a problem. Blip away Sir its not a problem. |
