Thank you for that, it is good to hear they are working on improvements, rather than just shoving marginal junk on the market and hoping to get rich and disappear before people catch on. Hopefully your next one won't be a dud. |

I've been following this thread with a good bit of interest. I like the idea of a battery that's lighter and makes more power and lasts longer.; but I also don't like batteries that melt down in the middle of nowhere. It sounds like Shorai is a viable possibility when the battery in my Norge dies. I'm sorry for your misfortune, Desert Bird, but seeing how Shorai is dealing with it, and how they are working to prevent a recurrence is a very positive sign. I guess that's the silver lining to this dark cloud.

If they don't deal with it by actually putting a smart charger as part of those cells (maybe it's there and I just haven't seen it), then they are just buying time.
LiIon cells are devilishly difficult to make durable... you need a very sophisticated circuit to charge them but protect them. What I have seen so far with everything but the Erik Buell Racing race battery is just some duct taped together surplus laptop cells. Without a charger, and probably some sophisticated mechanical packaging engineering, I doubt any will be long for this world.
There is a reason the Erik Buell Racing battery isn't cheap... |

I will be interested in a Shorai battery once they release there trickle charger that plugs in the top (charger port shown where Birds melted on top) |

How long until vehicles upgrade to 18V Li battery Systems? Lead and sulfuric acid cells are nasty and heavy and prone to problems, and they are well developed.
Is the Erik Buell Racing race battery LiFePO4, the same lithium-ion composition as the Shorai? |
