My front header needed a new C clip/retaining ring and nuts. The nuts had rusted away and so had the top of the studs. I got the top stud out but the bottom one was to tight to remove and I also had to cut both nuts off the studs. It might be a good idea to check the condition of these every now and then because access is not easy and a broken stud is a big pain to say the least. |

Yea, a broken stud is a PITA. Glad you got them out with out breaking them. |

Is the associated hardware a Buell-specific item or an H-D or aftermarket item? Mine look like a rusty knuckle bust waiting to happen, thus the interest. |

IIRC they use the same studs and nuts as Sportsters. |

Ugh mine look ugly... just figured I would have the dealer mess w/ it when a stud breaks. |

Here is a technique that has worked for me to remove rusted bolts, nuts, bleeder screws, etc. without damage... Heat the part with a propane torch. Remove the heat and blast the part with cold water. Repeat at least once. Sometimes it takes several hot/cold cycles. I use one of those rubber battery bottles to hold the water. Wear some eye protection. |

How about using that canned air, like Dust-Off. The stuff used for blasting computer stuff. There is a warning on the can about frostbite. With the hose on it, it`s concentrated, and controlled. Just a thought. |

Just remembered, on my FXR, I replaced the nuts with acorn nuts, so the stud would be protected from corrosion. (insert stud joke here) |

I drilled through the nuts. Vertical in-line with the stud, cut through the hole with a small cold chisel (splits the nut) and then its easy to wind off the nut. Its easy and very fast (15 mins) to do. Its an old engineers, yes I am, trick. |

My exhaust is currently off the bike getting Jet Hotted. I'm having the coat the studs as well, I hope that reduces the corrosion problems that crop up. We shall see. |

I suspect the coating will come off the first time you thread a nut on. |
