So I am putting along the freeway on my '06X at about 80 mph in rush hour traffic when the engine just instantly dies. No sputtering, coughing, stumbling, anything: It is as if I hit the kill switch. I thumb the starter to see if I can get it back to life, but it won't fire. I manage to coast across three lanes of stressed motorists to the shoulder. I again try to start it, but it just won't light. I flip the kill switch off then back on and voila: the bike fires up instantly without any hesitation and runs like a clock all the way home. The battery is fine. It turns the starter strongly. When the engine died, the oil light came on immediately, and the tripometer and clock did not reset, so the battery connections must be fine as well. So where do you Uly masters think I should start looking for the cause? The riding season is just starting down here, and I have some trips planned. Plus I've been enjoying commuting lately, so I really need the bike in tip-top shape. |

Bank Angle Sensor? |

Check your BAS. (Bank Angle Sensor) There was a recall to move this sensor out of the heat to the rear of the pan, by the seat catch. They forgot to do mine but I think the Comfort Kit protects it from the heat therefore I've had no problem. I would install the Comfort Kit or have your dealer move it under the recall. If you have already done either of these then replace it. |

Thanks for the input guys. The BAS makes perfect sense since the issue went away as soon as I cycled the cut-off switch. I have a comfort kit but haven't installed it yet due to the cooler weather approaching. Guess I need to do it anyway. I'll have to check and see where my BAS is located right now. I'll probably replace it anyway. It is a cheap part. Could a dealer take take my VIN and tell me if all the recalls have been done for my bike? |

Sorry Buewulf but I have to ask, just to satisfy that thing that killed the cat... In this instance, if Buewulf's BAS sensor is/was bad could he just turn off his BAS using ECMSpy? Does turning it off in the ECM (I assume its a matter of making the ECM ignore the BAS and you aren't really turning off the BAS) just allow the bike to continue regardless of the state of the BAS (whether it be bad, fried, cracked, shorted, wet, folded, spindled, mutilated)? I should have taken my meds today... |

I would think they could, should be in their system. If you have ecmspy you could turn it off. I would unplug it too, just in case. (Message edited by tootal on October 08, 2010) |

Yes.

It disables its functionality. I only recommend this bypass for troubleshooting or on track bikes. |

I would never disable it unless I were stranded and that was the only way to get me home. |

It is a funny world where safety features put us at risk. |

My bike did what yours did and it was the seat making contact with the ECM connectors. Some have found cracks on their ECM caused by this. I relocated the ECM and no more problems. Do a search here and you'll see various fixes. My Uly is an '08 (Message edited by someday on October 09, 2010) |

Froggy, you should definitely not disable your BAS. Just sayin'. |

Someday, is that the stock seat or the low seat that still contacts the ECM? |

Stock seat on a '08 Uly. I have 11,000 miles on it and you can see rub marks on the seat base where it was hitting. |

seat making contact with the ECM connectors The seat is definitely making contact with the ECM and quite forcefully. I suspected that it was a while back when I first put this seat on but couldn't tell at the time. 1000 miles later and the rub marks are now quite pronounced. I'll have to relocate the ECM. I'll still replace the BAS for good measure as well. For those interested, it is the low seat that is making contact. The '06 stock seat never made contact and fit perfectly: on-off with no fiddling at all. The low seat requires some pushing and wiggling to get it on. |

The plastic seat pans are the same from the stock to the low '06 seats. I found that when they are new they need a little "conforming pressure" to make them fit. But it seems that once they are fitted they come on and off with no problems. I bought my low seat new and it came with one of the spacer blocks for the ECM. Having both spacer blocks on there has fixed my seat rubbing the ECM problem. I went through two BAS sensors before they came out with the fix, but when they did the fix they moved my second one to the rear and it failed shortly after. The third one that has only been in the back has had no problems since. I personally recommend leaving the BAS in. Two times I have dropped the bike idling in gear. I was glad to have it shut off rather than launch itself in a laid over sliding wobble as my hand came off from the clutch lever. Neither time resulted in damage because of the BAS doing it's job. |

Happened to me on my 08' Uly X. Just once in 30,00 mi - never happened since. One of the Uly mystery's. |
