I took my 08 XT for a little 120 mile ride tonight after work. About 1/2 way into the ride, my CEL came on while I was sitting at a red light. I know we Buellers don't blip our throttles but I did it anyway after I saw the light was on. The CEL shut off and never came back on for the rest of the trip. The bike seemed to idle a little rough while the CEL was on but it may have been my imagination, not sure. Have any of you had the CEL come on for about 15 seconds and then shut off? Should I just pretend I didn't see it and go on my merry way? Or should I sell the bike while the light is off? |

You could check your battery. Maybe it is getting weak and the voltage got low while idling. How is the bike starting? First crank? Just an idea. Mark SE AZ |

You could also just check to see if there's a stored code. At least if there's one there then you'll know what happened. |

Mark_weiss, the bike seems to start just fine, no indications of a weak battery at all. Also, when I installed the comfort kit, I cleaned all ground connections and placed star washers between the terminals and attaching points. Griffmeister, I think I will try to pull a code from it. I will need to do a search for check engine codes because I don't think that is in my service manual. I know I have seen that list on here at least once. Thanks. |

My 08xt was doing something similar this weekend on a long ride. I have noticed that my bike had a week start and first crank would stall, and then crank over. This was my first indication of a week battery. I put a charger on the battery, but it was not taking a charge and showed a complete charge in only minutes. So on our ride, there were three times that the bike actually stalled when pulling away from idle to the point that it hiccuped and cycled the gauges as if the key were turned. The one time it actually reset my trip meters. This lead me to believe it was a short/ground issue, or still a battery issue. I pulled the battery today and took it into Interstate battery. My battery actually had a higher voltage than their "ready-to-go" batteries and actually performed better under the load test than the new one. So, I didn't buy the new battery, but where do I go from here? I hate to hijack the thread, but these could be related as my light did flash as well and the engine sputtered. GRRRRR, one month after the 2-year warranty expired and me 225 miles from a dealer. I will put the battery back in, clean the terminals and tighten it down good. If it happens again, the battery is still my first place to start. I have had a history of baking a battery every two years in my previous Buell. Thanks Guys! |

I jumpered across pins 1 and 2 on the diagnostic connector to see if my bike had any codes stored. The only code stored was a 34, which I do not see on the list. I checked it 3 times to verify the code was a 34. Same results each time. Does anyone have an idea what a code 34 is? Could it be the Idle Air Control (IAC)? Since the bike seemed to be idling slightly rough when the light was on, do you suppose the IAC was just a little sticky? Thank you. |

Those are the DDFI1 trouble codes, there are more not listed if you have DDFI2 or 3, in the case of the Uly you are either 2 or 3. I don't have a DDFI3 code list handy, otherwise I would answer what 34 is, but very well could be IAC. |

Thanks Froggy. How can I tell if I have DDFI2 or DDFI3? Are the codes the same for those two versions? I'm assuming DDFI3 has more codes than DDFI2? Thanks. |

You have a 2008, therefore, you have a DDFI3 #1 was for tubers #2 is XB with fan #3 like ours has computer-controlled idle speed with timing taken directly off the crank instead of behind the "points cover" Also, there is no "points cover" as the oil pump lives there now. |

The codes are the same for all 3 versions, they just added codes as they added more sensors and features. The list would be in any 08+ XB electrical manual. |

Yeah, it's the IAC. There are three things that will set a code 34, IAC system RPM higher than expected, likewise lower than expected, and problem in IAC circuit. Oddly enough though it also says that battery voltage below 9 vdc will disable idle speed control. Might want to recheck your power circuits again first as the code 34 diagnostics are a little involved. |

Thanks for the info guys. I only have the XB service manual, not the electrical or parts manual. After the CEL shut off, it did not come back on for the rest of the ride, about 60 miles or so with several stops at intersections along the way. I think I will just run it until the light comes on again. Maybe it never will? As you know, it is really hard to debug anything with intermittent problems as this. My riding season is about done for this year anyway as I am having surgery on the 28th and will not be able to ride for 8 weeks. By then, we will probably have snow on the ground. Thanks. |

Let's see, one occurrence, no active code and involves a part of the system that probably won't leave you stranded. Yeah, go ahead and ride. Just remember, if the light comes back on it might not be for the same reason. No need to tempt fate. Good luck with the surgery. Maybe December will start out warm and dry. |

Thanks Griffmeister. I added a jumper wire to my toolkit last night to check codes. I'm hoping I never need it! Now if I could just find a complete list of codes for DDFI3, I would print it out and take that along too. One can never be too prepared! Thanks. |

If I recall correctly, the check engine light also comes on if the exhaust valve is not working correctly. However, I don't know what code it throws when that happens. If it's sticking, it would likely be an on again, off again type thing. Wayne |

Wbrisett, yes, I have been through that one already. I had a code 21 and the actuator was replaced under warranty. Thanks for the input anyway. |
