Has anyone tried wiring it open slightly?

Just as a side note, it apparently is "open" with no tension applied to the cable, and is "closed" when the actuator pulls the cable.

It is open when you are at low RPM or when you are running at high RPM. The speculation is that despite what the literature says about performance, it is just there so the bike will pass EPA noise tests.

My actuator failed, and I just unhooked the cable (which keeps the actuator from blowing the fuse.) The bike runs fine w/o the actuator being there.

Jlnance, that is incorrect, at least on my 08 XT. When I was debugging my actuator, I started the bike and while it was idling, I manually pulled on the cable. The sound definitely became louder, indicating the valve is opening when the cable is pulled. I did not try riding it with the valve open at all but was tempted to. Thanks.

'08 here also. The service manual definitely states that the valve is open for faster throttle response and more top end horses.Other people here have said they noticed a difference or those that went with aftermarket exhausts without changing the fuel map.

The valve is CLOSED at all times other than high-RPM / WOT conditions. It's in the shop manual, I believe...just in case you *have* to see it in black and white.

Long exhaust tubes = high torque at low RPMs at the expense of high RPM breathing and power.

Short exhaust tubes = good power and breathing at high RPMs, at the expense of low RPM torque.

The XB12 muffler is the best of both worlds.

Ourdee, does manually opening your muffler valve with the switch affect driveability? Can you tell any difference, besides being louder? I open it up at stop lights when the car next to me is playing something annoying. Running with it open causes the bike to loose some of it's down low grunt, and causes a flat spot some where between 2500 and 4000 rpm. I put it on just as a novelty. I don't use it very often.

Ratbuell is right,"....
best of both worlds."

Exhaust Valve actuator p/n S1138.1AA = the newest part # for the kit is S0138.2AAB. just purchased for $150.00....they are now a FoMoCo part. say right on it. 3L3E-9G730-EA I crossed the # and came up with 2004 F150 5.4L Intake Manifold Runner Control Valve. $39.00, the ford part is one of 2 bags in the kit. the second contains the cable bracket retainer shown in the above picture
