I've had this problem for awhile now. 2008 XT, problem started at around 9000 miles. I'm outside Denver and commute at least 2-3 times per week, weather permitting, cold okay, no snow or ice. I have between 25-35 minute ride, depending on taking backroads/ city streets, or interstate. Most days on starting her it may take as many as 3 starts for her to keep lit. She stalls, rpms surge and drop so low that it seems like she should stall, recovers, coughs, repeat, then dies. Once started and warmed for a couple minutes, then underway she pulls very well until 4500rpm, and then falls flat like she's running out of gas. If I back off she recovers and runs great again, right up until 4500. It's worse when I'm riding the back way, lots of 40mph, some stop lights and traffic. If I take the freeway it is USUALLY better, even once I exit and I get into traffic, but not always. Sporadically she sputters and coughs while waiting at lights on either way in. I thought initially it was due to very cold weather riding, never really getting up to temp. The fan ALWAYS comes on when I shut her down (no comfort kit or reflash), but I NEVER hear the fan come on any other time (always wear a full face helmet, and have a loud-as-crap Jardine). The warmer weather may have improved things a bit, but this morning (around 40* and commuting back road route) I could NEVER get her above 4500rpm.
I'm about to take her in for 10k service. Hopefully an ECM reflash will take care of it. But what else should I be looking for/ at?

Bump......

I have having the same issue with my '08 Uly.

Last week I finally found a short in the ignition circuit that was blowing the 15A ignition fuse. Now the bike runs better, but has a huge flat spot at 4000-4500 rpm.

I may try disconnecting the ECM for a couple of minutes so it can go into learn mode next time I ride it. The short was really messing with the voltage going to the coil and injectors and maybe the ECM needs to start over with it's learning process.

On an '08 I cannot say for sure, but on an '06 or '07 I would be doing a TPS reset first.

TPS reset was the first thing I tried. On an '08 or newer it is so easy, I do it about once a month.

My 08XT had a high idle issue and ran badly randomly. The shop replaced the IAC and complete wire harness. Did not solve the problem. Although it did seem to fix it at first. Finally, they swapped the ECM and no problem since.

I would have them check the inlet manifold seals first to rule out leaks there. Then try a new ECM.

The shop had a hard time since there were no codes shown and it was a intermittent problem.

Mine hasn't shown any codes, either. Tried TPS reset, no change. On the way home, after my last post, I couldn't get it over 4000rpm. After a couple miles on the freeway everything was Nirvana. Rode home, let it sit for about an hour, then ran some errands. She ran like I think she should. However, it's been rainy, and snowy since then. I'm taking it in next week for the 10k service and let them check it out. Warranty runs out at the end of this month, I think. I'll post then.

Check those grounds under the seat first.....

When they start running funny and no codes are set.....

Check the spark plug wires also as they can rub agains things and start bleeding.

Well, I think I've solved at least most of my problems. I picked up a stock muffler a month ago and had been planning on replacing the Jardine. I just couldn't decide whether to Odie-ize it or put it on stock. I procrastinated long enough that the Jardine is finally, I think, completely blown out. It started popping more, and (I think) is louder (if that's possible?). Since I have all the parts, finally, I started the project last night. I have the service manual to help, but since I don't have another XB to look at I had to spend some time searching the net, and figuring some of it out as I went.

The only real delay was in finding the right bolts for the rear muffler mount. The Jardine kit replaces both mounts, and the rear is replaced with a flat steel piece, so the bolts were much too short. As it turns out, too short and wrong grade. And, at some time during the Jardine install they had stripped the first few threads in the cases. I had to make a call and a run up to High Country HD/Buell (BIG SHOUT OUT TO ZACK).

The great find was that the Interactive Exhaust Cable was still completely intact and routed correctly.

Anyway, got it all back together (no extra parts, I think), and took it for a quick 40 mile ride.

Okay, so it is quiet. But it is SOOOO smooth. It just pulls. NO drama. No bumps or hiccups, or stumbles. It just goes. With the Jardine, and my previous VRod, I was used to having big power surges. No more. AND NO MORE DECEL POPPING. I can let the engine brake without fearing that the end cap of the muffler is going to explode.

So glad I decided to do it now. Maybe I'll do a Drummer/Spec Ops in the future. But for now I'll enjoy the smooth, quiet ride. (Maybe try to find a Cherry Bomb air box cover so I can watch the actuator)
