Couple days ago I pulled the Uly into a parking lot while out for a random ride around town - climbed off, and noticed that both fork seals were just chilling at the bottom of the inner fork tube part. I don't know the proper term for it, the shiny thinner "unsprung" portion of the fork..

I moved the seals back up to the top portion of the fork and pressed them in hard with my hands. I've ridden a couple hundred miles since then including an MSF course with lots of hard braking (aka front end dive) and one small wheelie. The fork seals haven't moved so I guess it's a one time freak thing?

Anyone else had this happen? I think I noticed it quick enough this time that nothing was damaged since I haven't ridden on dirt lately, but I'd hate to be on some of the sandy dirt roads around here without those seals in the proper location.

It sounds like what actually moved were the dust seals. The fork seals themselves are usually held in place with internal snap rings and there is no way for them to fall out. If they did, you'd have fork oil running all over the place. The dust seals sort of snap into place so they could come loose. Hopefully it was a one-time thing.

yeah it was the rubber pieces that are visible without getting into the forks. Forks are one area of the bike that I haven't worked on yet, so my knowledge is little to none in that area.

This what the two look like - the seal is on the left and the retaining ring that Hugh mentioned is to the right of that. The dust seal is on the far right and is only a press fit in the upper fork leg.

Having said that I have had my forks apart for replacement fork seals twice now and while those dust seals are only a push fit it is difficult to see that they would both fall out by themselves.
Have you had any work done on the Uly recently?

no, I bought it new in October and it's got less than 3k miles on it. Never been worked on other than oil changes and a breather reroute and I did both of those so I know the forks haven't been touched.

Thanks for the explanation. Now I know what to expect to see when I do my first fork oil change : )
