I have just purchased a pair of PIAA 1100X driving lights. They are 55=80 watt dichroic bulbs. I haven't installed them yet, but before I do I was wondering if any of you had any thoughts in the wattage of these bulbs and the Uly's output. Will I be overloading the system with these?

I have them on my bike. They work fine, but ever since getting HID's I haven't really used them. 110w extra is only a fraction of your bikes power capacity.

Thanks Froggy.
I will likely upgrade my low beam to HID after my warranty has expired, but it seems the 1100X's will still do a better job of throwing light down-road (unless I HID the high beam as well) and lighting up the shoulders where the critters will be hiding. I've looked into the various HID driving light options, but it seems durability is a problem with many and price is a problem with all of them. Until they get a little better with the LED setups or improve the quality (and lower the price) of the compact HID units, these seem to be about the best option.

By the way, I've been searching the owner's manual for the total stator output and can't seem to find a number. Do you know that the total output of the XB12's charging system is?

Thanks.

If you're adding electrical farkles, get a voltmeter. Kuryakyn makes one that many use, and there are many threads on the FatBstrd gauge here on badweb (a color-changing LED from signal dynamics, IIRC).

Another option is changing to 35w bulbs. Most every color H3 style bulb is available in 55w and in 35w (often called "powersport") ratings. I run 35w in my driving lights, and because of the beam spread (much better than any OEM is allowed because no DOT rules!) I don't notice the 'missing' 20 watts : )

If you are running all four 55W lights at the same time (high, low, and driving) you may have a low voltage condition at idle. When I ran that combo on hot days where the fan was running a lot the ECM would shut down the aux. circuit at stops. I changed my headlights out to 35W HIDs and that seems to have eliminated that issue.

Basically what Ratbuell did, only different...

According to the Buell site your 2009 puts out 405 watts. IIRC my 2006 puts out more, about 500. Mine has no problem keeping up, even with two 55W H7 driving lights and two heated vests going.

Interesting that they would go to a lower output stator in later models. It seems they would go the other way, considering that by 09 BMC would have had a much better idea as to what Uly riders are demanding of their bikes.

Anyone know if a higher output stator is available or rewinding a stock stator for more output is possible without causing electrical damage?
