Hey, I'm too big for my own good. So, I'm looking around at the options for aftermarket windscreens, and I'm wondering : will any of them actually make a difference when I'm so flippin' tall anyway?

I have trouble believing that the XT windscreen will do anything significant for me. I've seen the MadStad adjustable mount, and that looks like it might help, along with a taller screen.

Any other mammoth riders out there willing to share some experience in this area? I figure if it isn't going to help significantly, may as well save the money.

Thanks a ton.

I'm 6'5" and have the Tall and it works pretty good. Always looking for other options though

Okay great, thanks for the info.

So, where does the majority of the air hit when you ride? When I'm on the interstate I'm practically holding on for dear life, because so much air is hitting me square in the chest.

I've got the Buell tall (XT) screen, and am 6'3". After a long ride at highway speeds with few or no breaks, my neck will be kind of stiff. I'm sure it's from the air hitting me in the helmet, but frankly, I just don't notice it (in the form of buffeting or strong pressure). It does appear to keep it off my chest. The thing is, I don't do a lot of that type of riding, so the tall screen fits my needs right now.

I am 6' and have the xt tall shield. its useless. it is a quieter ride with out it.

I am looking into this for myself http://goo.gl/Fs5q

I did read here that with a tall screen you still get wind from the frame, so you need wings next to the lights.

I'm 6'1" with a 33"/34" inseam and I found I had too much chest pressure with just the tall shield. I added a Laminar Lip which took the pressure off my chest but gave me some head bobbing! Ah, the solution, for me anyway. I added Memphis Shades' Lowers and the head bobbing is gone. Time and miles will tell but I think I have it solved.

Where did I get these ideas? Right hear on Big, Bad, and Dirty from a lot of very helpful people. Thanks again folks.

That windshield looks like a real good option. It's not too big or too small. Does anyone have one on their bike? I'd love to know.

If you can find a used one, the CeeBaily +2.5" with the curved lip a the top takes almost all the pressure off your chest but leaves your head in clean air (if you're 6'3"+). Unfortunately they don't make them any longer . It looks almost stock so you don't have the BAW thing going on.

I'm 6'3 and found the most comfortable is no screen at all. All clean air with no buffeting at all. The Buell tall screen hit me in the forehead area with lots of turbulence. Very annoying for me. Now I run the standard shorter Buell screen most of the time. If I plan on doing more than say, 500 miles, I'll run without a screen.

after reading more here on this forum. and the cost involved.
I have decided to go this route.
first: http://goo.gl/rTnv with the mounting kit for a Honda VTX.

then see how that does,

if I do need a taller screen then I will try this: http://goo.gl/Rsce

Hello Greg? I am 6.0 but have a 32 inseam. So I was spose to be 6'4" but it just didn't happen. HAhaha. Where I am going is I am tall in the upper torso.

I just this week installed the Madstad brackets, the old style with knobs not the new ROBO BRACKETS per my request and the 20 inch tall Adventure Shield which I believe is for a Syder. If you go to Madstad's web site look at the Canam set up and see the shield and look at the Uly pic for the basic front attach plate views. I only have 15 or 20 miles on the bike since installing the set up but its a winner with me. I have a Dl 1000 V STrom with a 23" CeeBailey Sheild and the Madstad on the Uly seems to block more of the wind off my head and shoulders than the Stroms set up.

Its adjustable up and down about 3 inches and it also tips fwd and can push the wind up and over my XXXL Shoei Helmet! So I have a very good range of adjustability and so far its a great set up. Less than $300 shipped. Delt with Marc and the customer interaction with email and phone calls is great. Good people to deal with.

The only draw back is I screwed up a few of the mounting holes and had to tap them up a size from 10-32 threads to a 6mm since thats all I had on hand. One can't wait to do it right ya know! AHhahaaaaaa.

I will try and post a pic if I can figger out how to do it. I am happy so far. Oh I have a slight rattle just off idle but hey! Foam tape will eventually fix that.

I have the Madstad also and when it's cold out I put it all the way up and all the way out. This punches a pretty good hole but adds a lot of noise. It is warmer though. The lowers mentioned above should help a lot since if you hold you hand below the handlebars it makes a big difference in noise and air flow. I've seen several attempts at lowers and the thing I see is you don't want to mount them too low or too far forward as this could mess with the air going into the air scoops. I remember one guy saying his fan ran all the time until he realized his lowers were screwing up the air flow to the engine.

The MadStad is nice since adjusts to different conditions easily. I just use a tank bag to block the wind done below.

The Madstad has the design flaw of replacing your flyscreen. Palmer Products makes one that bolts right on and reuses the stock flyscreen.

"reuses the stock flyscreen."

Maybe so but I have a pimple on my ass thats bigger than the OEM shield! AHhahaaaaaaaaa. Actually the Madstad will work with the stock shield I believe. I just wanted more wind protection. The Strom has spoiled me. So I went with a 20" wind blocker. I will see this weekend how it works at speed.

No it does not work, it requires you remove it.

OH! My bad. FLYSCREEN. The mounting plate / bucket cover. We call the windshield a flyscreen down here. Bug gaurd, shield, flyscreen, all the same thing. Like a Coke is a Dr.Pepper or big red or Pepsi. Northerners say ya want a Pop or a Soda. We say, ya want a Coke for everything! ahhahaaaaaa. How the hell do ya post a pic here anyway while were at it? HAhaha.

Does a tank bag work as well as lower wind deflectors? for blocking the wind off the frame

It's interesting...other guys the same height as I and with the same (XT) windscreen have different buffeting experiences. I guess you gotta' take into account seat height, handlebar angle/rise, and torso size. And if you have an unusually large head.

I swapped Ulys with an equally tall friend: he got off mine freaking out how much the ride experience was. He had a low seat, stock X windscreen, and his bars were tilted forward. On his, I felt like I was sitting down deep inside a cockpit. On mine (with the tall seat, slightly forward-tilted bars, and tall screen, he felt like he was riding on top of a bull, leaned forward and angled down the road. It was a fun experiment - they felt like two different bikes.

I have the knob adjustable Palmer brackets and Palmer windshield (medium?) on my Uly. Both in very good condition. I think I'm going to go back to stock.

If anyone is interested in these parts, let me know.

Yes...the Uly windscreen is the most "glass" I've ever had on the front end of a motorcycle. In other words, I'm used to being out in the wind. It's never bothered me.

The only position I've found that noticeably reduces the wind around my helmet is having the shield on its tallest setting. In this configuration, the screen vibrates like crazy when near idle throttle and drives me nuts. I'm not interested in cluttering-up the front of the bike with any additional supports to help mitigate the vibrations.

I'd just assume go back to stock and ride in the wind like I've done on every other bike I've ever owned.

I'm about 6'1".

Tipsy

So when you want a Coke you say Coke, but when you want a Dr. Pepper you still say Coke? Does not compute, divide by zero error....

Other one dosen't fit anymore. The clutch side won't fit when I'm done upgrading that to a real clutch too.

My personal experience, yes.

There is hundreds of factors including your gear that will all affect wind noise, wind flow, and comfort. I am putting clipons on my bike just to get out of the wind. The ape hangers currently on mine are horrible.

Now that I've finally got a throttle lock and my heated gear, I think I'm going to take the bike back out on the interstate for a bit of 75MPH riding and remind myself how much the wind bothers me.

Seems like it's such a personal choice, I should probably go form an opinion : )

I notice a big wind noise difference depending upon my sitting position. Some difference if I'm slouching or sitting up right but especially how close I am to the faring makes a big difference.

Yes and Yes. HAhahaaaaaaa.

"So when you want a Coke you say Coke, but when you want a Dr. Pepper you still say Coke?

Thats what one may say to a fello rider or friend to see if a beverage is in order. No, when ordering I would specify! Ahahahaaaaaa. DICK! HAhahaaaaaa.

I am trying for a quiet zone for my big head is why I am even messing with a larger than stock WIND SHIELD. Mainly for road trips. Day rides is no big deal with the wind. I did notice today that with the shield fairly high and tilted fwd some that over 100 the bike ossilates or wollows back and forth some. Not bad but it is noticed. Rock solid with the OEm shield on.
