Hello all,

I'm thinking about buying a 2007 xb12x uly. It's a factory demo. I can buy an extended warranty for the bike, but would like to hear from you all if it's worth it. 4 yr ext - $1,307, 3 yr ext. - $1079.

Are there any problems out side of any recalls, that need to be fixed, or tend to break? I live a long way from a dealer, so I'd be likely to fix small stuff myself if I can.

Im trying to decide if I should by an '07 uly, or a 1999 s3t. Anybody ever have / ride both? I like adventure riding but have a KLR 650, to do anything rough. I will mostly be riding street, and a lot of highway miles from Arkansas to Minnesota. Camping and light fire trail short distances. What bike would be best / most comfortable. I've not sat on an s3t, but owned a X1.

Any advice welcome,

Thanks

Gabe

The warranty: We are split on it, I say its not worth it. Read the fine print, many items that fail frequently on the XB may not be covered. Wheel bearings, fan, belts, brakes.

About the ST3 Vs Uly, there is an ongoing thread about that. General consensus is that the Uly is superior in every way except wind protection.

Gabe...the Uly is awesome for what you want. Comfy...mostly upright...ride across America...but burn the twisties! That is what I use my 09 for. Have a DR650 for abusing in the mountains. Also...the two year warrentee is plenty to find the lemon if you go ride it a lot.

"$1,307"

I'd pay that for a 4 year guarantee that no HD tech will touch my bike. You're trying to do the opposite?

btw recalls will be performed free of charge whether you have a warranty or not.

Save your money and at least collect interest on it. Just remember that extended warranties are not a service contract. I've always operated under the assumption that if an extended warranty was necessary then the bike sure must not be reliable. Either they provide the extra long warranty at no extra charge (which they won't do) or you just save that extra cash in escrow (in YOUR bank or mattress) and pay if a problem pops up. Never pay in advance for something that MIGHT happen. Bearings and belts do not cost 1300 bucks. And if that money is burning a hole in your pocket then buy a Garmin GPS and other farkles, then at least at the end of the day you'll have something in exchange for your money. Not so if you fork over the dough for an ""Extended Dealer Use of your money Warranty""

I contemplated this for almost two years, and finally decided to do it. I bought the 5 year warranty, which extends my 08 Uly for 3 additional years. I had several happenings these past months, kick stand snapped, rear wheel bearing went taking the swing arm with it, and the exhaust header was too short to get an adequate seal to the muffler. While all this was covered under the original warranty I was concerned about going forward. The big thing that sold me was the coverage for towing, hotels, rental car reimbursement, and wheel and tire coverage in case you break down on a trip. It cost me almost 1/3 of the cost of the 5 year warranty to get my bike towed last summer, which was in addition to the AMA breakdown coverage that I had. I hope I never need it, but for me the piece of mind is worth it, especial when on long trips.

Good point, I went for it and sad/happy to say it paid for itself on my first trip to Alaska.

I went for it as well, I added 3 years to the 2 year warranty on my XT.

The first thing I though about AFTER the fact, was that I like to modify my bikes. Hm.
