Well Saturday I'll take off on my first weekend trip on the Uly now that I have some saddle bags. I'll be giving the bike a good once over before I take off but am interested in anything else that I should possibly pack with me. I plan on a quart of oil and a tire plug kit with CO2 if I have a problem to get me off the road. Also have a few tie straps, electrical tape, multi-tool and the tool kit. The real fear is I will be traveling through some very dead areas of SC with no cell signal and little to no Harley/Buell support. Any thought, suggestions, etc will be greatly appreciated. Jimmy |

No fear bro you will be fine with whatever you bring......having a tire patch kit and compressor or multiple CO2's is good. I pack a spare clutch lever and gear shift lever just in case I break them out in the boonies. Crap that happens on moto journeys is part of the adventure and I don't ever expect to have Buell or HD "support" while on the road. The the BADWED BRAN is a great thing too. Have fun! |

Dynasport - I always have that tool with me but in all honesty, in Liberty Hill, SC.. it's almost a completely cash environment. Needless to say I'll have some of that with me too. Firstbatch- Extra shift lever and clutch handles.. sounds like you removed the side stand option! Thanks for the advice though! Jimmy |

I bought one at Walmart and did a mod to it like shown here which makes a nice small package: http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle-technical-a rticles/air-pump/ I also have made a wire hook to hold it up off the ground when it is running. It gets hot! |

Spare fuses is never a bad idea. +1 on the compressor vs CO2. If you're on a budget, you can buy a compact one for ~$20 at Wally World; if you really want to make it small, remove the outer plastic casing and throw it away. Looks like there are some decent backroads around Liberty Hill. Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw isn't far away; not sure if anything is going on there this weekend or not. Thundertower HD/Buell in Elgin isn't too far away if you have a serious problem. |

I guess I'm alone in thinking that you should just go ride. Don't spend too much time over thinking things, or you will bring half a garage full of spare parts and tools. The primary things I worry about carrying, are water and a basic first aid kit. |

Camelbak or other hydration backpack system. Oh, and earplugs. Nothing tires you out like excessive wind noise and dehydration. |

Would it also be a good idea to bring a spare belt on a multi day trip with a lot of off road travel? Seems like the one thing you really don't want to break in the middle of nowhere. |

If by tie straps you mean the plastic electrical wire ties, that's fine but I always carry a set of tie-down straps just in case you need your bike rescued in the back of some guys pick-up. It's way better than the indignity of laying your bike on its side in the bed of a truck. I also carry the stainless steel version of electrical wire ties in case your repair happens to be around a heat source or require extra strength. Don't forget the sunblock and chapstick. |

I carry the tubeless kit from here: http://www.motopumps.com/ You end up with the same raw pump as you would from stripping out your own pump from a walmart pump, but it is a lot easier this way. Plus it comes in a convenient pouch with reamer and plugs, a gauge and even a needle for your soccer balls. Super handy. And it fits under the seat nicely. |

Beer? You never know....could end up in a dry county. Thankfully not in SC. I've been trying to remember to bring a flask or bottle of whiskey. Even if you are not in a dry county you never know if you'll realize that you are sans alcohol after the stores close. It is not unusual also to find yourself arriving at a campsite or remote motel late and tired. A run into town for a six pack - which sounds easy and simple on paper, sometimes turns out to require more energy than I can muster up at the time. Riding safe sometimes requires sacrifice, but sobriety (after one is done riding for the day of course) is not one we should have to endure. Also, if you have whiskey you can save weight and luggage space by not packing the following: - disinfectant/topical antibiotic - anesthetic - degreaser I'm sure I'm forgetting some... |

And if you have really good whiskey you could use it for fuel. |

Thanks for all the tips. I will mainly be slabbing it on the interstate until I hit Camden and then hit Hwy 97 straight up to the lake about 20 miles north of Camden. And as for using good whiskey for fuel... tisk tisk.. what a waste!! As for the air pump.. I have that exact air pump at home so I guess I'll pop it apart on Friday when I get home from a business trip. I've got plugs and what not and throw them in a small bag. Everything else.. H2O, etc. I'll make sure to pack it! Exactly the stuff I was looking for. |

Small piece of plywood to put under the kickstand. - Keep it tucked in your jacket. Annoying to ride someplace really cool & unable to get off because the kickstand sinks in. Have to ride out, park on the shoulder then hoof back in just like on a cruiser. |

+1 on the motopump kit, thats what I carry. Been stranded before with a broken shift lever so it is an easy item to pack. |

Well all went well. Now I can't wait for the next trip to the coast in three weeks. Only problem I encountered was on I-95... the Ulysses wants to run! Letting it hum along at 3500-4000 rpm hauling me, saddle bags, and a triple tail bag, the fuel mileage dropped off quite a bit. Ohh well! Maybe I should run the speed limit and not keep up with traffic. Thanks for all the advice as it sure made it easier to take off for the first time. |

Glad you had a good time. I was hoping you would make it to the track so I could meet you. Race bike shakedown went well. |

Dude I've been to labrador on my uly, Don't think there's much in the ways of harley dealers there... closest is a 2 provinces away across 2 ferrys or 1000miles of dirt road... I've been to deals gap and back to canada, to northern ontario... northern quebec many times... Forget the oil, you can buy oil anywhere. Bring the tire plug kit and a multitool. Chances are the headlight blows or you get a flat and not much worse than that. On longer trips I bring a spare belt and a spare clutch cable and a bigger toolkit. thats it. Enjoy! |

Glad that you had a good time! I just got back from my first Uly trip, a 4-day jaunt down to SE Missouri (Ride report at http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50 4152). I, too, was a bit worried about being out of phone coverage, so I opted for a SPOT emergency tracker: http://www.findmespot.com/en/ |
