I am seeking some input regarding an electrical gremlin of some sort on my '06 Uly before taking it to the dealer (or to avoid the trip althogether as they are well over an hour away). Thanks in advance for any ideas/thoughts, and BTW I do have a manual and consider myself fairly mech. inclined, so I may be able to sort things out with some help. So, on to the problem. A few weeks ago I had to replace the regulator after the bike died on me suddenly in traffic. All other systems checked out and the new regulator seemed to have cured the problem. Then, just a day or two ago, shortly after startup and riding away I noticed the engine light come on, the bike continued to run just fine (all lights/gauges etc. worked OK) and the light simply went off. The engine light continues to come on/go off at seemingly random intervals, with no relation to engine RPM/speed, cold or hot engine and so on. One possibly related issue is that my fan seems to be on its way out, but it is still operating (it just sounds a bit wheezy now). However, yesterday when I parked the bike after a ride long enough to trigger the fan, it failed to come on when I turned the ignition off. Then, when I turned the handlebars to the left to lock the fork the fan kicked on, perhaps a short in the wiring harness by the triple clamps, ala the occasionally reported headlight going out when turning the handlebar to full lock? I am supposed to take it to the dealer Saturday morning, but figured I could at least try the at home/jumper wire code check since I have a manual. Has anyone experienced such an issue? Would a weak fan cause the engine light to come on at all, are they related? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks again. |

Check your grounds. There are a couple of wires on the front of the steering head and many under the seat. There are power lead splices in the steering head bundle that can break inside the heat shrink. There are many places in the harness that have crapped on mine, I would suggest a service manual, some good heat resistant tape/wrap, and patience. Then open, inspect, repair, and re-wrap as needed. |

Thanks for the reply Etennuly; I already checked the grounds in both of those locations, and they are tight and clean. The thing I don't quite understand is the on/off nature of the engine light. Wouldn't the light stay on all the time if there was indeed a legitimate failure of some component/sensor, even if that failed part allowed the bike to run just fine? Thanks again. |

I would cut open the harness at the steering head and check for broken splices. You'll have to cut open the shrink wrapped splices at the steering head. |

I just had the same sort of thing happen. CEL and voltage issues. I swapped the reg and it work a while and the the CEL came back on. Checked the charging system with ECM SPY while riding and the vltage was bouncing from 12.3 to 15.7. once it hit over 16. once the CEL popped on and got a high charge fault. It was the blasted STATOR!!! Crappy job but it is easy once you have the tools to do it. 52,000 miles I can't complain. |
