I could not take that rusty stock exhaust any longer , I removed it and painted with tremclad high heat paint , while waiting for it to dry I found a new in the box jardine can on kijiji.ca for half the price of new . got it home and installed it on the bike . on its maiden run the uly didn't seam to mind the free flow of the jardine can but after a quick cool down the uly started to skip and pop like the fuel curves were way off at all rpm ranges , got it home and run it the next day and it ran much better . my question is does the ecm "re learn" ? as of today . it runs quite well with a very slight loss of midrange power .

i think that if they had that much flexibility built into the ecm, you wouldnt need to bother with ecm spy or race ecm..(forget it on the 08s)

08 harleys and buells seem to run hotter than other years due to the lean map.. on the harley, you can reprogram with a race tuner... not many options on an 08 buell.. frankly i would be scared to fool with it..

as you can see from my profile, ive owned as many buells as the next guy and always modded them....it was really hard to learn to leave my 08 alone, and after 7k fairly trouble free miles, im glad i did...

i just bought a new bmw r1200r... what a fantastic smooth power delivery...im very impressed with the bike... it is almost silent, but im not going to do a single mod to it, as far as the motor that is..

I don't plan to mess with remapping , the more it's driven the better it runs . other than a slight pop on decel it has seamed to "learn" how to run , actually i find the low rpm manners to be better than before . also the glowing pipes has diminished at an idle . time will tell how the uly will make out , at least i still have the option to reinstall the stock pipe

I disagree with your observation on the 2008 running hotter.
My 2008 seldom ever turns on the fan when it's running.
It certainly runs cooler than my X1 but it seems to also run cooler than my friend's 2004 XB12s.

But 08's have a different cooling system, and the temperature for when the fans turn on and off are higher.

To answer your question above - yes, the ECMs on Buell XBs do "learn" and they will cover a pretty wide range of air flow changes. My honest opinion is that many people get more thrill out of making expensive mods and troublesome remapping simply for the sake of doing so and ignore the fact that they made no meaningful gains in performance in the process.

there are numerous post on this forum about issues with the 08s... some do and some dont..

American Sport Bike is a pretty astute source of info on the subject and they were unable to break the code with ecm spy, that would exercise the gremlins..

harley ecms dont alow for mods without a download and i would bet that buells dont either... if they did, there wouldnt be any need for a reflash that many of the 08 harleys and buells had done..
when you mod a motor , most of the time it requires a re-map...

its your bike, im sure you will do whats best.. thats my opinion..

Thanks for the replies . I work on ford and navistar fuel injection systems and modified them both . they both have the ability to "learn" and can take a free flow exhaust and larger throttle plate for better air flow BUT when intake manifolds , converters removed and high flow injectors are installed they set off codes like adpative fuel trim limits reached and set off check engine lights and most generally are very harmfull to internal engine componets like pistons and valves , usually spark plugs tell the story and in my buell's case the rear cylinder is a medium brown and the front is very slightly darker which leads me to believe the fuel mixture is ok with 290kms since the jardine install . I plan on keeping a close eye on the plugs , they ultimatly tell the story . I could not ride today with snow on the ground ,
