this is the second time so I know it wasn't something that I did this time. the first time was last august on the way in to DC the bike lost all power I was running between 75-80 on 395 the temp was in the mid 80 and it was still early. it did it 3 times all with in 30 minutes each time I shut the bike off and restarted while rolling with the start button. the last was Friday on the was to OH 30 minutes in to a 7 hours ride. something but this time the bike just ran like it was only firing one cylinder. after each restart bike would run fine for a 2 or 3 minutes at speed. (third restart I dropped speed to about 70 for a few miles. after 3rd restart the bike ran great. I covered over 500 miles that day and had a moving average speed of 75 mph.
I love this bike. it stands in a category by its self hooligan touring
dose my bike have gremlins?
is this what it is like to own and old Brit bike?

No. If it was an old Brit bike, your lights would rapidly dim, as the charging system would not be doing its job, but the bike would keep running, since the magneto was independent of the electrical system. Then, the mag would begin misbehaving. Finally, the bike would stall and you would be unable to restart it for several hours, for no apparent reason. When it did start, your right connecting rod would make a spectacular exit from the confines of your crankcase; thus ending any electrical problems you thought you might be having.

My guess is its related to the stator/voltatge regulator. Read up on the issues with the 77 connector.

Sounds like it was going into spark skip mode. It may have gotten too hot or the sensors that measure temp may not be reading incorrectly making the ecm think it was over heated.

Hey Jaybirdxb12x,

You might want to consider ECMspy (free) and a cable (bike to computer) purchase, which I think is around 30 bucks or so.

My 07 ran like crap until I used ECMspy to fix it. I fattened up the fuel maps - IMHO, the bikes are set up too lean because of EPA regs.

If you get ECMspy, I'll email you my EEPROM, to try, if you like.

Totally unrelated, but similar symptoms. We had a customer in a couple weeks ago with similar behavior - misfire, lose power, sit/restart and it's OK for a bit. We'd replaced plugs and wires in the past, fixed it at the time, so we let him go. We dug a bit deeper this time - when the tech opened the throttle body and looked into it, he saw part of an intake gasket hanging into the intake tract.

Hm. Problem found.

Sounds similar to a problem I had last summer. Get up to 75 mph on a hot summer day, long up hill pull and it would start skipping with a red light on the dash. Stop the bike, start over running fine, a few miles later it did it again.

Problem found to be, after BAS recall was done, ECM wires hung down and just barely touched the battery bracket where the BAS was mounted. It was shorting out the number 2 coil wire. It just barely touched, only when it got hot enough. It had one tiny silver wire showing.

The wire routing on the bike could be improved...check under the air box base for sensor wire touching the rocker box...front spark plug wire chaffing..I have shrouded lots of my wires with clear tubing...The seat can touch parts of the ECM..padded with a strip of inner tube..

thanks for all the great advise. and things to look for. I guess the real kicker is that at the rat is is currently happening I will have to wait another 6 months to figure out if and thing is fixxed
