Hi, I've been lurking for a while lusting for a Ulysses ( I ride a 2005 KLR) and now I'm ready to join the club!

Came across a 2006 XB12X with 1,724 miles asking price of $7,995.

Want to ask the board for any pros/cons/ issues on this year/model or should I look for a newer model year?

If I decide to look at the bike anything I should look for when inspecting it?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

Jay

Hi Jay and welcome to BadWeb. I'm no expert at pricing or on Ulys for that matter having owned my XT since July but my take on 8K is that you're probably 1K over what most consider a reasonable price. There have been folks here that have found a new 06 with full warranty for 6995. Others like Dr. Greg who just replaced his deer slayer 06 with another just like it complete with hard bags for around 6500 I think. Like I say, I'm no expert but I do think that 7995 is too much even with really low miles. YMMV

Check with Ft_Bstrd.

He's trying to sell his. It's been well cared for with lots of goodies.

Being that the 2006 was the first year of the Ulysses, it is the most problem prone. Most of the following were resolved or improved in the following years (some are subjective): Seat is too high, forks dive too much while braking, the Dunlops suck, the bearings fail, the belts snap, the turning radius sucks, foot pegs are slippery, clutch cable holders snap causing the cable to melt, but most importantly it wasn't available in blue. : )

$7995 is TOO much. Don't forget to add in taxes to the price if buying from a dealer.

Buy after market non-dealer. Good deals to be had.

M_singer has one for $6500 with bags with 7500 miles.

Mine has more miles but other goodies for $6000.

There is NO difference between one with 1700 miles and one with 5-10000. There is not enough benefit to be worth the additional $1400 plus tax.

Have an 06 KLR that I plan to keep, but truly love the ULY. I think the price is way too steep. Keep shopping or offer the $6000!

I would actually be far more leery of buying one with that few miles than I would one with more miles. (Unless it was purchased super late and still has a fair bit of factory warranty left.) Low mileage vehicles tend to get the miles all on short trips (the hardest on the bike) and have service intervals based solely on miles. Add to that, there is probably a reason it has that few miles, it could be anything from a wreck early on, or a particularly unreliable ride. Now granted there are other reasons the mileage could be so low, but they aren't nearly as common. (IMHO)

If I hadn't already picked up my XT when Ft_bstrd put his on the market, I would have bought his in a heartbeat.

I just got an '08 XB12X with 1200 miles for $7700 and that's from a dealer! Granted bike sales are always slower in the PNW in the winter so I'm leveraging that and the fact that 'luxury items' in general are down. I would recommend buying FBs bike (even if you have to fly out and drive back!) or just offer them $6100 and see what they say :-).

Welcome to Badweb Jay.

As others have said, that price sounds too high to me.

I have owned two 06 Ulys. It was the first year of the bike. There were flaws discovered that were fixed in subsequent models. All of the important ones can be retrofitted back to an 06. I'll list them here from memory:

1 - Change to aftermarket brake pads to prevent rotor pulsing

2 - Reinforce fuel pump wiring to prevent chaffing

3 - Replace rear wheel bearings with 09 updates.

4 - Add behind fork wire guard from 07 model

5 - Add heat deflectors from 08 model.

6 - You will probably need new throttle cables.

7 - Your muffler will rust (all years, not just 06.) Paint it periodically, or ceramic coat it.

PS - Buy Fattys Uly and save yourself the trouble. You'll get to ride the dragon on the way home, and stepping off the plane after spending Jan in MA will be like heaven.

First let me also say hello, I've been lurking around here for 6 months or so and finally registered a few days ago.

Just an FYI, for the price I paid.
Yesterday I bought an '06 Uly with 6k miles, hard bags, factory warranty until April for $5,300, and 3yr tire replacement from a dealer in Jacksonville, FL. After all their BS fees and tax/title.... blah blah blah it was out the door at $6,500 (which was the price/amount that really matters anyway). Oh yea, they also threw in a new helmet.

Several times I almost dropped a msg to FB about his bike since it looks so sweet but never did b/c the distance from me and the miles on the bike, even though its obvious he has taken immaculate care of his bike.

So I guess, based on what I just paid for mine, the deal your looking at isn't real good imo.

I paid $6,923 for an '06 with 9,950 miles. All bags, a few farkles, no warranty. Not a great deal, but I know the original owner, it was local, and I'm a sucker for a nice-looking Barricade Orange '06 Uly!!

As others have said, your price is a little high.

Oh, regarding front brake pads, I tried the fancy aftermarket pads and they caused extreme problems. Back to stockers and all is fine. Yes, I'm an anomaly.

Ithought I read somewhere if the wheel bearings have the orange seals then they are the updated ones.

In 03 the seals where black, they revised it and came out with orange seals. Now for bikes build in August 08 and later, they are back to black seals. Green or purple would of been too complex, and odds are they had boxes of black ones sitting on the shelf : )

I haven't read anyone decry the dramatic depreciation these bikes suffer. All everyone is referring to is how cheap you can get one.

I bought mine brand new in 06 and it's depreciated to 1/2 that value in 2+ years. That sucks.

Why doesn't the Uly hold its value a bit better? Anyone have any reasons or theories?

I know, I know, it's not an investment, but the declining value of these bikes is breathtaking. Sure can put you on the spot financially if your earning potential does an about face...

I have tried to sell mine in the past year (financial reasons) and decided against it. The offers were so low (guess they weren't after all) that I would have donated the bike before I sold it for so little. Get this, my wife wouldn't let me sell it anyway!

I would definitely buy a used one next time.

Now, before anyone reams me a new one for pointing out an obvious wart on the Uly, it by no means is a reflection of bike itself. Just saying...it sucks is all.

There was a recent discussion on this, The Uly is no worse than just about anything else, 2 or 4 wheels.

New cars and new bikes all depreciate about 30% the minute you drive them off the floor, at least 30%. I bought a Triumph T-100, list price was $8200 in '06, it's now worth maybe $4500, right about half price.

Buying used has its own pitfalls, break-in procedures, undisclosed wrecks, somewhat less support from some dealers. But if more of us start buying used, the prices of those would go up in comparison to new.

Its like anything else, houses, cars, women, children. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. In the case of my Uly............. whoever wants to buy better come come LOADED! and then maybe!

Thanks for mentioning my Uly for sale FB. May I also add that it has most of the factory warranty left as I purchased it new on the last week of Fen 08. Either of our bikes would be a better deal the the one that the OP mentioned.

Why doesn't the Uly hold its value a bit better? Anyone have any reasons or theories?

Three reasons. The 09s list for approximately what the 06s did, but contain many updates. Better springs, heat management, oil pump, ecm (debatable), and forks. That makes an 09 worth more than an 06, and by extension drives down the value of an 06.

Also, a new bike comes with a 2 year warranty. That's worth something, probably a lot. As that warranty expires, the value of the bike goes down accordingly.

Finally, it's a sportbike, or at least close. People get on them and beat the snot out of them. Even if you don't, buyers are going to assume you did. That drives the price way down.

It won't matter much for the next few days. Tennessee will see low single digit temperatures for the next couple of nights and highs in the low to mid twenties.

Brrrrr fer sure!

I just bought an 06 Uly from an Indy Dealer in Spring Texas. The price was 5800, 6300 otd. It has 9200 miles on it and is stock, no bags. Now I need bags and a 07 seat. Also I guess I need to bring it in to the local dealer and let him give it a once over and change out any recall parts that should have been done.
