greetings!!

i bought my new 06 uly in jan 08, (one year ago) as a "quiting smoking" present to myself, she had 41 miles day of sale and i had her fully broke-in by march. About 6800 miles now.

This past Sunday, i found a local dirt road which led to a forest-like area... (pine) and a trail so I explored it.

Link to the TALE:

I took pictures/documented most of the days events... i am wondering if i can post them here? and...how should i do it? all in one post or... divide the pics up between replies...argh sorry. right now... they are 1200x900 so i have to get them reduced, but here is a teaser:

oops... #1

i'd like to post the hole short story ... if possible...cuz,...it gets worse....(or better!!!).

Looks like the leaves may have "baited" you in on that one.

At least if you are posting this, you made it home -- how about the Uly ?

This is going to be good.

Pictures always make it better - for the big trip posts, Sleez is right, but give us a heads-up with the link on the BB&D page!

Welcome to the club!

Hello and thanks for the warm welcome.

I have a closeup of the stuckness, it was thick ice, over stinky-smelly-water-mud-clay....and...Yea,.. I was solo. (this was the 1st of 5 "oops" in total)

Next time I bring:
1. Riding buddy
2. Shovel
3. Rope
4. Flashlight
5. something else (i forget)

I will post up in the Tales section, when i get the pics resized and in order. (and a link to it here)

Back with I had my BMW GS, I tried something similar.

After working myself to exhaustion getting the 550lb beast unstuck, then having to go home, get a butter knife, and scrape all the caked on mud off of it. I decided that God made real dirt bikes light for a reason, and 500+lb bikes with street tires have no business going anywhere a grandma couldn't roll her Rascal scooter under it's own power. : )

We try to tell 'em Chad....The ULY is nothing but a long legged sport bike...500 lbs and sport bike size/type tires are allergic to mud. "Adv-rider Syndrome" struck again....Nice pics

I love the fact that so many of us react to getting stuck or wiping out somewhere by whipping out the camera and taking pictures... It's the first thing I did when I got stuck in the mud last September.

If one were to be stuck in mud, say up to the axles & one walked back to the barn & got a block & tackle where would be the best place to attach it??

This assumes a plentiful supply of robust trees in every direction.

You understand that this was never an actual problem.

Pull it forwards or backwards with a block & tackle. Throw it around the front or rear tire and hook it high on the tree. Have your buddy hold it upright and winch it out. Tire should slide easy if you are hooked high enough in the tree.

Bah. Give me a Rebel 250 with street tires, and I bet I could ride it 98% of the places you'd take a "real" dirt bike.

Love it! I rode on a similar ride on a XT225. Breaking through the ice on a ride into the mud is a lot of fun. Riding buddy when you are going to get really adventurous, Priceless.

Wow +10 for keep'n it up-right.

"Dirt bike", its all in your head. May I quote Kunga Fu panda:

"There is no secret ingredient."

My 125cc scooter has seen alot more dirt/mud/water that my uly.

Fatty, have you been in your "Private Stock" of vino again?...I agree you could possibly take the Rebel to 98% of the places I take my 250 KTM XCW-e BUT..after a week of you not showing up and I would have drank all your good stuff.....the Chinook would have to airlift you out....Cheers...

If any of you saw the "Long Way Round" series where Ewen McGregor and Charlie Boorman took BMW GSes around the world, you'll see just how valuable light weight is in the soup.

Their camera guy, Claudio, had a bike failure and they had to buy him a cheapo Russian single. While the big GSes were getting bogged down in the mud requiring ropes, trucks, etc to get them out.....Claudio on his little Russian POS just rode right through it.

AND..I think he made the comment the Russian POS was easier to ride than the Beemer...I just went from a 450cc 4 stroke to a 250cc 2 smoker. The weight difference is only about 20 lbs. but it feels like 50... the 250 is MUCH easier to ride in the bad stuff. The right tool for the job = less pain and suffering.
